Default Walking not working

When I went on a big diet a few years ago, I used to walk all over the place and the weight just fell off. Now, I don't even sweat when I walk and I'm not losing any weight. I normally walk at the speed of light anyway, so I just don't think it's effective for me anymore. You think Pilates would be good for a workout? I think I need something that will really get my heart racing so I can burn off the calories.

I think your body is accustomed to the walking and you have to take it up a notch. Either walk on hills, power walk, or go faster. Or do some otehr type of exercise like spinning, elliptical, swimming. You need to change things up cause I am thinking your body may have molded to the walking

Sounds like you've reached a plateau, unfortunately ... To break a plateau you need to increase your intensity or change your exercise or zig-zag your calories a bit for a week or so OR all of the above . You should also incorporate some weight training into you workouts every second day or so to make some lean muscles. Muscles burn fat even when you are at rest so the more muscle you have the faster your metabolism is and the more calories you will burn...

Try skipping! Or running a little then walking a little...get a heart rate monitor and try and keep your heart rate above 70% of max. Adding weight training is helpful, too...you'll be more toned as you slim down. Keep up the walking - just add more vigorous exercise as well.

What if you incorporated arm movements into your walking? Lifting your arms up, swinging them, briskly pumping them?

Or you could try wearing ankle weights?

I agree with Finn - try running. Running will get your heart rate up. You can ease into running by following the "couch potato to 5K" program...

Walking doesnt do anything for me in the weight loss area either. I enjoy it but if i want results i have to opt for pilates, core secrets (balance ball), or elliptical. I try to do one of the three EVERY day.

Gina~You are so right about skipping! We skip at tae kwon do sometimes and I feel it in my heart rate and out-of-breath-ness (is that a word?).

Run, Turkey, Run! (Couldn't resist!) : )

I did the ankle weights and arm weights about 30 lbs ago. I initally plateaued due to increased muscle..then I increased my speed and distance as soon as I was strong enough (4.0mph max walking, 4 miles 5x a week) Then I started to jog now I am powerwalking and interval running every other day I powerwalk and sprint (7.4 MPH top speeed so far). My neighbor who is a personal trainer of women recomended the sprinting as a metabolism booster. I stay interested with the changes and my body responds. Definetly get a pedometer if you don't have one to monitor your progress. Go, Turkey , Go!

OMG, thanks for all the advice. I found a Tae Bo tape in my closet and I think I'm going to try to see how much I can do.

Running -- Not with these boobs, lol. Seriously, I would need to use a whole roll of duct tape to keep 'em steady. I would love to be able to run around but I think I'd want to be a little thinner first.

Run turkey, run ... LMAO ... too funny. I love this board. Thanks again for all the comments. I've finally lost my first 10 lbs!!!!!!
