Hi, I am considering gastric bypass and I have a few questions if anyone could help me out. I know that just being overweight is not enough (according to some websites), I am well over 100lbs overweight and my BMI is like 38. How do you know what your insurance will pay if any? What other criteria do you have to meet? I know if you have diabites or something-I don't know if I have that.
Laramie,
Each insurance group is different. You'll need to see your primary doctor and see what they recomend. It was easier for me to get approval with my insurance company than it is for most. Some require a 6 month dr. supervised diet.... some require alot more. You can call and ask your insurance company what their specific criteria is, and then see if you fit... You still may have to see your primary doc to get the ball rolling though.
Good luck,
Sharmel
Laramie,
I had gastric bypass last October. My insurance company didn't require anything of me and I didn't even have a primary doctor at the time. My surgeon required that I get one after surgery but I've only been to him once to get my blood work done at 6 months out. I will have to go back to him to get blood work done again in October. I have been blessed by not having very many medical problems in my life. The surgery cost was somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000. I had to pay about $3000 out of pocket because I went out of my network in choosing my surgeon. But I wanted a reputable doctor if I was going to have my plumbing rearranged!! I knowabout 5 people who had the surgery with this doctor...and it was worth it to me.
Sharmel is right....every insurance company is different and so are the doctors. Check with your insurance company first and choose your doctor with care. Research Research Research. Learn all you can about the surgery and the doctor. Then do what they say. Good Luck !!
