For the past month or so (with the exception of this past week) I've been exercising at least 4x a week for 30 minutes (cardio) and I've tried to have 2 sessions of strength training in there as well, I've been eating alot better (not excellent but I was doing really well for me) and I havn't lost ANY weight at all, this past week as been a complete disaster because my period is coming which usually makes me eat non stop and I've been so stressed out that I've been eating alot of junk food...
Anyway I've been reading about an underactive thyroid and I'm wondering if this could be the problem? I've worked out and ate healthy in the past and nothing as happened as well. It seems that no matter what I do I can't lose weight and then I give up...It is frustrating because I talk to people who are losing or have lost weight and I can be doing more then them and my weight won't budge but yet their losing weight doing hardly anything at all! *cries*
If anyone knows anything about these please help!!
PS: The weight loss tracker in my sig isn't really accurate because my scale jumps all over the place all the time, at the gym last week their scale was saying 200, then I would come home and my scale would say 207 or 205, at home it has stayed around 207 the past 2 weeks or so, so really that tracker is just the highest weight my scale has been and the lowest weight I've seen on a scale lol
Maybe you're eating too little? I know that sounds weird, but it's been the problem for a lot of people. Hypothyroidism is usually characterized by lots of sleeping, lethargy, dry skin, being cold, dry hair, etc.... If you're curious you can always ask your doctor to do a full thyroid panel, just be aware that if you're put on thyroid replacement, it's permanent. You'll need to always take it for the rest of your life.
Yeah my mom says Im not eating enough but there are so many more options to eat when ur not trying to diet lol trying to eat ALOT and healthy is hard! I still havnt gotten used to it. I was reading about the symptoms of hypothyrodism and i have them all....so Im going to get my doctor to test me for it on wednesday...i think they have to do bloodwork though!!
good morning trixie14,
i saw your post and it touched me. i to have an underactive thyroid. i had it check back in the lated 80s. i was at the drs office on another matter and i started telling her about some symptoms i was having. she thought it would be a good idea to check out my thyroid. she gave me a pamphlet. it had alot of different symptoms in it. this is what she explained to me. if you have heart problems and your heart isn't working you get your heart fixed or you die. well with the thyroid it's like if you don't get it fixed it leads to all sorts of problems. this isn't to scare you. each individual is different in their symptoms. i don't know of anyone that has had them all. the list is pretty extensive. it's just that if you have some literature and it sounds like a lot of the things it says match you. it's well worth checking out. i was started on a low dose of synthroid a hormone. i get it checked twice a year. the test is simple. it's a blood draw. it you don't like needles. sorry. that's the only way it can be checked. i've been on the same doseage for years. the problem i had was that the dr. didn't tell me i would have to be on it the rest of my life. she told me i would only be on it a year or so. not true. the thyroid is't producing the hormone i need. i found this out in talking to my nurse that i work with. that's why i take synthroid. the other thing is it can mess up trying to lose weight. if you look at my diet tracker you can see i am. it's hard work, but well worth. i decided this is the year i'm taking back controll of my life. i have spent decades not being healthy. now i choose to become healthy for the rest of my life. don't let this get you discouraged. you will do it because you are worth it. heres to your health my dear. have a magnifisent monday. let me know what you find out.
kind regards,
mary
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (non-functioning) in November of 2002, when my son was 4 months old. I am on Synthroid daily as well. I have an incredibly hard time losing weight, regardless of what I do. Now that my thyroid is pretty much under control, it has made things MUCH easier. I had an appointment with my endocrinologist on Monday and he told me if I had been taking my medication correctly (I had run out of refills and had so much drama going on I didn't get it refilled), my weigh loss would have probably been 10 pounds more. Not only that but an untreated thyroid problem can lead to many more serious issues. One of the main ones is myedexa coma. Basically, your thyroid controls your metabolism, heart rate - so many things like that but when you're not producing thyroid hormone (TSH) your body slowly shuts down and your organs fail and you can die. (I'm not saying this to scare you, its the speech I got when my doc found out I hadn't been taking my medication correctly). Its a simple blood test and can GREATLY improve your health and you will feel SOOO much better when your thyroid levels are correct
Hi guys. I'm 18 and I was diagnosed with a hypothyroid about a year and a half ago. It runs in my family (both grandma's, aunt, mom). I find it so hard and frustrating to lose weight. It's almost discouraging. I've been on syntroid for quite a while. Recently I had an endo appt. and she said I had lost about 10 lbs. I've kept this off and my thyroid level is just about stable. I think the best thing to do would be to check it out. What do you have to lose?
Definitely get it checked. I've been taking synthroid since 1989.. and it's been great and I"ve had no problems at all. Just one little pill each morning. ..no side effects or terrible things.
I do think it will help the weight loss. I lost a great deal of weight, but didn't try hard enough to keep it off..thus here I am..
Hi, ladies. I'm also hypothyroid and on 200mcg of Levoxyl daily. What you eat has a big impact on how you lose. I work with a RDA and she has me eating more protein and a few complex carbs and staying away from anything white - sugar, flour, etc. - and I have done quite well. It's very similar to the way WW Core Plan works. I feel so much better and when I slip and eat the wrong stuff I feel physically terrible until I get it out of my system. If your insurance will cover it, it's well worth going to a RDA for guidance.
Wow I am so glad I came across this thread. I was diagnosed with hpothyroidism in October of 2004. I am 27, I was totally freaked out. I went to the endocrinologist, had a fine need aspiration done because I have some very small nodules. Result came out okay. I have been taking levothyroxine since October and am due to go back to the endo. in May. Anyways, I have recently decided to follow the LAWL plan and it seems to be helping with weight loss. We will see I just started. It sound similar to the WW core plan, or the plan that QuilterinVA was saying she was on.
So hopefully this works.
I was diagnosed hypothyroid about five years ago. I take Unithroid AND a custom formulation of T3. There is a lot of good information on thyroids on about.com's thyroid pages. Here is the link:
After looking over the articles there, if you feel your thyroid may be your problem, ask your doctor to test it, but make sure they do a full spectrum thyroid panel. Also, make sure your doctor knows that the normal range for TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone...what they usually use to determine whether you are hypothyroid, or hyperthyroid, or not) has been changed and is now .3 to 3.3, instead of .5 to 5.5.
I struggle with losing weight, even with my medications regulating my thyroid levels fairly successfully. The only diet that has ever worked for me is Sugarbusters. Atkins did not seem to be enough carbs, and Weight Watchers was too many carbs!
Good luck! Its frustrating to work at losing and not succeed. At least you are healthier, and not gaining! (not much consolation, but I tell myself that all the time to keep going! )
HI, I've been on medicine for three years, I went in for a yearly exam and mentioned that I hadn't had my thyroid checked for 10 years so they did it and found out mine was slow. I had been very tired and extremely cold. I returned to Weight Watchers in Feb. and am losing weight. I do the flex plan because it closely follows what I did the last time I was doing Weight Watchers. DM
I forgot to mention that I do the Walk Away the Pounds two mile walk with the weighted balls in the morning on work days and the Walk and Kick tape on the weekends. DM
