Question

Just curious -

I find that I get a more intense workout if I'm listening to some motivating music with a good beat!

Just wanted to know what you all were listening to, if you do listen to music during your workout.

For those of you who don't, I would HIGHLY recommend investing in a good Discman or something like that. The good ones (with the anti-skip technology) can be pricey but they are well worth it. I paid $200 for my Sony Discman over four years ago and it hasn't failed me yet! (Try to get a rechargeable one that you can plug in the wall to recharge - you'll save a fortune in batteries - that's what I have). Previously I would bring a magazine with me but after finding my concentration and workout intensity go wayyyyy down I stopped doing that quite some time ago.

BTW, for the past six months or so, I've been mostly listening to Tool and A Perfect Circle during my workouts. I also have some CD's that I burned myself with various rock songs that I enjoy listening to!

Take care and Happy Mothers Day to all!

Default Music

Music is a definite must for me, Mrs. Jim. I try to listen to very motivating music, very upbeat. So far the best CD I've ever used is "Fat of the Land" by Prodigy. Yesterday I listened to Moby's latest CD, "Play".

If I'm in a rut or feeling kinda depressed and mopey, I listen to something not necessarily upbeat, but something that really motivates me emotionally like Paula Cole's "This Fire" or her latest, "Amen".

Occasionally I'll just choose something from my collection like Tori Amos - "To Venus and Back" or Smashing Pumpkins, but my favorite by far is that Prodigy CD. It really gets ya movin with many times, a very intensive force.

I really enjoy listening to music with kicking beats....it keeps me going....

a cd that i got recently that has been real good is Aerosmith's Big Ones.... it is kinda a greatest hits compulation...the music gets to going and i forget the world....

i also like Salt and Pepa... i think the one I have is also a greatest hit version... the music has a great beat and it is easy to get in a groove....

I also have a Tom Petty greatest hit collection that is good....

Alot of the 80's bands have greatest hit cd's out now and they work pretty good.... you get the good songs on one cd so you dont normally have to hit the skip button to much....

Another type of cd I like to workout with are music soundtrack cds...different musicians...different music all in one... I like What women Want.... good 50's type music on it... and also Runaway Bride... has some good country music on it....these dont keep me going as fast but they are good....

Just some ideas....

Default Country Music Moves Me!

Hi all, I have a Sony Walkman that I never leave home without! I like to listen to Country Music. Shania Twain can really get me moving. All of the music is really upbeat and very easy to walk to. Of course, I realize hot everyone likes Country Music....but for me...it is the best.

This is a very timely thread for me - I usually don't venture into the Exercise! thread at all (still not loving exercise, yet - but forcing myself to walk every morning).

I absolutely need music to keep me motivated. My sister, last christmas, gave me some web money and I went on line and bought a bunch of tapes (don't have a portable CD player yet) at sportsmusic.com. They have tapes mixed to a consistant beat per minute which keeps me walking at a consistant pace. They have everything from latin to country. My favorites are the Shape music tapes because they feature the orignial artist (not just a remix with someone else singing the songs). They feature music tapes from beginning to advanced ++. I used to mix my own music but I definitely prefer premixed tapes.

They are kind of pricy (12.99 per) but I love them and I just ordered three more yesterday (2 advanced walking tapes from Shape and 1 Country mix). I can't wait to get them.

Another good walking buy - I think sportsmusic.com sells - is a neoprene cassette holder that goes around your waist and fits to the small of your back (they make them for CD players too). This eliminates the jarring you get with a fanny pack. I have started to hold my walkman and I keep my keys and dog mace (was bitten once) in the holder. It is very secure and doesn't feel bulky.

What I need to find is a place that sell cheap XXL workout clothing (I don't want to spend $30 on shorts and $30 on sports bra). Target used to carry a line but not in the store close to us. Walmart stuff doesn't have enough lycra to keep it from riding up my legs. I need that stretchy stuff because "normal" shorts ride up my legs and I am forever walking and pulling them down! I will survive with washing what I own every three days until I find someplace great.

Fun subject! I alternate between walking and jumping on my mini trampoline. I need to invest in a walkman so I can walk to music, but when I'm home jumping, I crank up the stereo!

My favorites at the time are Madonna's Immacuate Collection, Adam Ant's greatest hits, and Lenny Kravitz greatest hits. I guess I'm a greatest hits kind of a gal ! I love putting on music because it makes the time go by so fast!. Much more so than if I watch t.v. while exercising!

I need to pull out my Top Gun soundtrack--that a great one too!

Default Eve...

...I have one of those neoprene CD packs too! In fact my first one just wore out after over three years and I purchased a new one last week. Indispensible!

As far as plus-sized workout clothes, well I don't know about Target or Walmart, but you should give this link a try:

http://www.sandiegofit.com/plus_woman.htm

Also www.title9sports.com has a terrific selection of sports bras - also I love the way they rate them according to cup size and use (low impact, high impact, etc).

These aren't discount places but do have a good selection of large-size workout wear. I totally recommend the Champion Jogbra series - they fit great and last FOREVER - I've got like five of them right now! If you look hard enough you can find Champion products for sale on the 'Net. If you have a Macy's nearby I think all their Champion products are still 25% off this week. Whatta deal!

If those places don't work, I'd suggest you check out Mode or BBW magazines - I haven't looked at those mags in awhile but I remember they had great ads!

Music wise - I'm waiting for my new Tool CD to be delivered - ordered from Amazon...

Default Me Dinosaur!

I'm still with a cheap cassette player (worried about getting a cd player "lifted" at the gym or something), and have some really ancient stuff that I love.

Last night spent a 1/2 hour with the Pointer Sisters from 1984 (the one with "Jump" and "Automatic"), and the day before that it was Rick James (who wrote the hook that became "Can't Touch This" by Hammer many moons ago). Parliament (Funkadelic!) Old Van Halen (The Dave Era!). Soundtrack to Footloose. Prince, Petty and vintage Dire Straits also excellent.

I'm working on putting together a country tape with Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood and (yum yum..) Keith Urban (sorry, I've OD'd on Shania!).

Also love the Atlantic Soul Classics: Sam Cooke, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and anything by Aretha.

I like to listen to books on tape. I rent novels and listen while exercising. It has also helped motivate me, I have gotten on the treadmill to find out what happens in the next chapter when I have already exercised once that day.

Default VeggieTales Silly Songs

O.K. you guys are going to think I am crazy.
I rollerblade with my daughter in the Baby Jogger (she is almost 2 yrs. old)
I have a Sony walkman cassette player that I plug in little speakers in the headphone jack and we go down the bike trail listening to "VeggieTales Silly Songs"!!!

They are actually very upbeat and fun to listen too.
If you aren't familiar with VeggieTales they are a series of children's videos (my husband and I enjoy them too!)
that teach Christian values.
I keep the volume low enough so we don't bother others using the trail but we do get LOTS of smiles when we pass them.
Just my 2 cents!!!

Default CD Players

I've got this cute little round Discman, which I like because it's easier to hold on to while walking or jogging, and it's a nice purple color.

When I'm pushing my 5 yr old in the jogger - I can't listen to anything (music or otherwise) like Jilly's Mom... because my 5 yr old chats with me the whole time. I bring her coloring books and crayons - or her leap frog alphabet thing and she loves it.

But when I'm alone in my basement on the exercise bike or lifting weights.... At 6AM I'm still hooked on the heavy rock beat - AC/DC, Queen, Meatloaf, Matchbox 20, Guns N Roses. The high school kids getting the bus in front of my house must think we are nuts because you can hear the beat pounding outside that early in the morning.

Music is essential when I'm exercising. Some of my favorites to get moving are any Pet Shop Boys, Yaz-best of, Depeche Mode-Songs of Faith and Devotion, any Queen, Erasure-best of, and some Lords of Acid.

Basicly, anything with a great hard beat works well. However, today I listened to Ministry and found that industrial music like this a bit difficult to set a pace with.

Hello everyone! Saw this thread and thought it looked interesting.
Well, right now I'm using a CD of "MTV Jock Jams" songs, because they're very upbeat, and most of it is dance music so its fast enough to keep ya moving!!!
I saw an ad in Shape magazine recently for their CD collection, but I haven't checked that out yet!
My workout music varies so much...if I'm just walking, I take along Dave Matthews Band, and if I'm running or doing tae-bo, I use either my jock jams cd, a mixed cd of "pop" type music, or some stuff by paul oakenfold. Depends on the speed in which I want to move!
