Quote from interview 12/6/04 People Magazine with Kirstie Alley:
What have you learned from this whole experience?
I've learned a couple of things; the most important thing is you can either create a beautiful life or you can be a victim. Here I am, I sort of stumbled into being fat. I'm not saying I'm totally responsible, but I sort of wasn't paying attention. I can either be the victim of being fat, or I can say, "Okay, so you're fat, what are you going to do? I just thought you don't stop living, you keep living and create with what you've got. I created myself into this fat thing, I'll create myself out of it."
I'm very curious about her new show! I have mixed feelings about it so far, but that's just based on what I've seen in the media. I won't know till I actually see it. I like that she's very honest about her feelings about being overweight. She doesn't like being fat, but she doesn't dislike herself.
She's also making a killing on being fat, that's for sure - not only has she created a tremendous buzz for Fat Actress which I don't think is even AIRING until March 2005 - but she's also signed a nice fat contract with Jenny Craig to be their newest celeb spokesperson...AND gotten two People Magazine cover stories in less than six months.
Given that, I've always liked her...although my favorite movie of hers is actually one of her least successful: For Better or Worse with Tim Allen (where they hide out amongst the Amish).
And since neither I nor my sister are Showtime subscribers, we'll probably end up just reading about it. Our big Teevee jones in March will be the season premiere of Deadwood on HBO - Jim and I got HOOKED last year.
Hi Suzanne-I am with you. I am curious and have mixed feelings as well. I guess we have to wait until March.
Mrs Jim-I liked that movie too and yes she has made some money. Like Suzanne said I like her honesty and the way she doesn't seem to beat herself up and just make the best of it. We have heard so much hype it's had to believe the show does not even air until March huh?
Thanks for your input. I saw the article while waiting for a doctor's appointment and thought it was interesting.
I had mixed feelings, too, because I was assuming that it was a show designed to humiliate her and her problems. That is, until I saw an interview with her on one of the TV news shows. As stated, she realized that being overweight isn't fun, but she's not down on herself and she knows it's something she just needs to buckle down and take care of. She's doing the show not only to capitalize on it and make a living, but partially as an answer to all the tabloids who have become obessed with her weight, even grossly exaggerating how much she weighs. Sort of an, "OK, you want to make this an issue? Then it's MY issue and I'm going to be laughing all the way to the bank. Print what you want, it'll only make more money for me."
Now my attitude is, "You GO girl." Don't have cable, and don't know I'd actually watch it if I did, but ... more power to her.
I would be interested to see how it is...but I think she has carried the fat thing way too far...she is using it for press because I think she does not know what else to do...they are always referring to her as the "205 pound actress" which is very insulting...
Mrs Jim - I think you mean "For Richer or Poorer", it is also one of my favorite movies...and I LOVE Deadwood...cannot wait to see the next season, I went to go and buy the first season on DVD at Target and it was like $85 !!! So I will be waiting a while on that ...

Well...at least I got it from the same source... For better or worse, for richer or poorer...
Been awhile since my wedding!!
HBO's showing last season's DW's this month...plus we have On Demand and have watched our 'fave' episodes several times over the past month or two... Gotta find out what happens with Sol and Trixie - not to mention Seth and Alma... yeeeehhaaawww!
Funniegrrl-That's great! I had really seen the tabloid stuff but I heard they were giving her a hard time. Why not get back at them and make some money too!
Carri and Mrs Jim-Too funny on the richer or poorer, better or worse.
Hope you all have a great Friday and terrific weekend!!!!
I've always liked her, and I think she's a beautiful woman, fat, skinny, or anywhere in between. Why NOT capitalize on what the tabloids are obsessing over anyway? They're making money reporting about her weight, she might as well take some of it off their hands! LOL!
I'm anxious to see her show and trying not to make opinions until I do see it... Although I am a bit annoyed that she has said on several occasions it's not just her fault she's "fat"... and that annoys the heck out of me, because if it's not her fault, who's fault is it?
I guess if she is going on jenny craig her show will not last...the title.
I dont know how I feel about it. Fat actress??? Hmmm it is sort of sad that we should be defined by our body type, not talent and abilities.
I think she looks great, even at 205, but it annoys me how down on herself she is about the weight gain. Yes, she's turning it into an opportunity for herself, which is a good thing, but I've heard her say things like she won't have sex because she finds "fat sex" disgusting (or words to that effect). I don't think you can really lose weight until you love yourself, and she doesn't seem to be very loving towards herself. Of course, I'm judging by interviews--who knows what's really in her heart.
I think the Fat Actress show is a one-shot (one-season) deal with Showtime anyway...
You know I found out last weekend that there is ALSO a film titled For Better or Worse - it was on one of the Cinemax channels and I turned to it thinking it was the Tim Allen/Kirstie Alley film, instead it had Jack Lemmon
Not to sound catty or start a flame war but IMO (judging from how *I* looked at 205 - and I'm only 5'4", not sure how tall Kirstie is but I'm betting she's taller than I am) Kristie probably weighed/weighs significantly more than 205. I was thinking more along the lines of, say, 240-250 or so...?
Geez! I'm glad she stated she does not want to be a rep of overweight people. Good greif! I was really suprised by her ignorance in this article. She does not have any idea how she will lose the weight. I hope she gets a personal trainer, or she seems likely to go on the grapefruit diet! And, geez, she thought she weighed 165, just not buying it. This article definately does not make me a fan. I expected more.
