Default pro. needed-very overweight

I keep reading you need 1gr. pro for each pound you weigh. Do they mean this for even the very overweight folks? Or should you eat 1gr pr pound of goal weight?

Hi BabySteps and welcome to LWL!

You'll find lots of opinions on this but I've often read that we need a gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. (You have to know your body fat % to be able to do it this way.) If you don't know what your LBM is, I think it would be reasonable to base it on your goal weight.

If you're "very overweight", eating a gram per pound of body weight would sure be a lot of calories and might make it difficult to reduce your calories enough to be able to lose fat.

Tell us some more about you and what kind of plan you're following.

Hi Meg, thanks for the welcome and the advice. I thought that would be too much concidering my goal is to reduce.

As to what plan, Im not sure yet. I joined the gym, start Tuesday. Have B4L & BRx books. I am just trying to find what is the best thing to do for maxium fat loss and muscle gain. Do you like one better than the other?

I haven't done either of those myself, but there are others here who have lots of experience with BFL or BRX. Some have even done both so I'll let them answer you.

If no one else replies, you might want to ask the question on the weekly thread. There should be a new one tomorrow.

Meg did a customised program of her own.

I would suggest that you start one of the programs at least to get you going whilst you are learning more. No one program is necessarily better than another - it comes down to how it works for your body and you won't know that until you give it a go.

Hi Babysteps,

Just wanted to say that I agree that 1g protein per lb of lean body mass should suffice.

Body for Life is a good place to start. When you're more comfortable, you can customize something that works best for you.

Good luck.
