Talking Steel Magnolias -- #15

Good Afternoon! It's only 84 degrees right now but feels warmer because of the humidity. The wind has died down so all in all not terribly miserable outside. The air conditioner has been off and on all afternoon. I went to get my nails done this morning and have spent the rest of the time putzing around the house: did a load of laundry, wrote some church cards, balanced one checkbook, washed a pile of silverware which seems to fill the dw slots before the glasses and plate sections, and sorted through a box of silverware headed for the rummage sale. I need to decide whether or not to polish the tarnished pieces which may be antiques (not a whole set) from my grandma. They are nothing I would use so off they go. Tonight is game night; someone asked if there would be wine with the snacks provided. It's in a Lutheran church so might be a possibility.

"Gma," glad to see you got your referral without a hassle. It's too bad Jack has to wait so long. I wonder if calling every day and bugging them would speed it up. Maybe a cancellation will happen. I would certainly let the surgeon and office manager know how incompetent that woman is. I'm sorry about your air conditioner! You haven't had it very long have you? I love the hat! The little topknot made me smile. I don't know if it's cold enough where you live, but up here the little kids (even some bigger kids) are wearing animal hats with eyes, nose, ears, tongue, etc. I wish our grandkids were younger and I would buy one for each.

I need to get something ready to wear tonight. Hope you all enjoy a nice evening!

Good morning to you all. It is still rainy here and makes it very humid. The temps have dropped into the 80's though so it isn't quite as bad. Luckily, Jack hasn't had to work out in it or in the blower building which has no ac and is underground.

I have started the blanket that matches the striped hat and hopefully by next week I can have it done and then get the shoes done and take it all over to her. She never did call so I don't know if she even got the message. She is a lovely lady so I don't see her being that rude.

I need to get upstairs and finish cleaning the bathrooms. I started the one and finished it, but it got so hot I didn't do the other one and need to get up there early.

Jean: The ac unit is fine. I don't know what it did to itself, but for some reason it clicked off to humidifier and kept going back to it. I left it off all day yesterday, then unplugged it and plugged it back in and turned it on and it has worked fine since. Goofy thing. I noticed those face hats are popular. You know, I made sock monkey ones several years ago for the kids to wear climbing Mt Kilamanjaro. I swore I would never do that again. Putting on the face part was a pain. I know, it becomes not as much fun when the kids start growing up and away from little kids stuff. I rarely buy clothes except tshirts for Jackson and never buy any clothing anymore for Thomas. He wants to go to Georgia Tech. Maybe I should get him one of their tshirts. I did buy a sweatshirt for Jackson for Christmas. It said something like, "I am the son of a Jedi unless my mother gets her letter from Hoggwarts." I thought it was cute. I don't know if he'll wear it or not.

Well, I need to get my day started. You all have a nice Thursday.

Good afternoon, ladies! In the 90s and humid. They keep promising rain but it hasn't happened. We need it badly.

Went to the Y this morning then got a hair cut and went to the grocery store. All that Casper will eat is Friskies Prime Filets and they have stopped making them. I got some stuff I hope he'll eat. He'd eat the treats all day long if I'd let him but at $7.99 a pound it's not an option and wouldn't be good for him either.

Donna, I'm sorry Jack has to wait so long. I was 2 months waiting for my foot surgery the first time. We always seem to have about the long waiting for surgeries around here if you want to go to a good hospital. We have one that takes care of the prisoners, gun shots, and stuff like that you can get in pretty quickly but I won't take a dog there for treatment. I guess your AC was just tired of having to work to hard. This summer has been a lot hotter than last year. And September is just around the corner and the worst month for hurricanes. Have you read the new Harry Potter? I'm on the waiting list from the library with 4 more ahead of me. I'll wait until it comes out on Audible to buy it.

Jean, I had my grandmother's silver. I gave it to the thrift store. The younger people don't want stuff like that anymore. Are you going to the lake this weekend?

Have a wonderful evening.

Good Evening! We have had a variety of weather today; some clouds, some sunshine, a heavy brief shower this afternoon followed by a couple hours of bright sunshine, and now it is raining again. I did some serious cleaning yesterday, and then we went out for supper with a friend from Bob's hometown. Another hometown friend invited us to a family reunion program. The group is a mom, daughter, and two sons, all who sing, plus dad who does the lighting and sound then drives their tour bus. The adult kids all play violins and guitars, very talented group. They bought a bank building and renovated it into an apartment upstairs, a small auditorium on the main floor, and a gift shop in the basement along with the vault and safe deposit boxes. We found out the family is a very shirt tail relation to Bob and they live in the house where his great aunt lived with her two adult sons. It was tradition to go to this aunt's house for New Years Day when Bob was a kid. It is a small world! Today I had a perm first thing which took all morning. I spent the afternoon getting food ready to take to the lake tomorrow. We are celebrating Maddy's birthday so I hope the weather shapes up.

"Gma," I suppose you have been knitting up a storm today!

Susan, good luck finding a new food Casper will eat. Does he like people tuna or chicken? Ernie turns his nose up at one kind of treats so Sunny gets more than his fair share. I have asked about sets of china at the antique store but the owner said no one wants them. Sad!

It's been a long day! I am going to give up and go to bed. Hope you all have a nice weekend!

Good Morning! It's cloudy with showers in the morning forecast, and 60 degrees! We are getting ready to head to the lake to celebrate Maddy's birthday. I'm thinking jeans and a sweatshirt! It's been a busy week for me and I'm ready for a couple days of "nothing" before next week's schedule begins. Hope you all have a nice weekend and enjoy!

Good morning to you all. I swear I posted on Friday. Brother my mind must have been somewhere else.

Yesterday we spent most of the day putting furniture together, cleaning up the boxes and Styrofoam mess, vacuuming, etc and putting everything in place. I now have a proper living room and when we do the floors it will be great. I am ok to wait on those though so we can squeeze in a trip or two before we do it. The best part is we now have room. Before the big couch and double loveseat took up a lot of room, so much so you were walking sideways and trying to get around stuff to get to the computer. Even the little inexpensive couch looks nice though Jack says company won't stay long if they have to sit on it for very long. I doubt anyone will be beating down our door since we don't know anyone but Kelly and Tom here and Kelly is peeved at us and Tom really has no need to come here unless it would involve Thomas in some way.

We are going out in a bit and get breakfast and go to WM then back home for the day. It is raining right now, but I need to learn to put the scooter together without help before Jack has his surgery. He won't be able to lift anything with two hands so some of it I have to do so we decided to do a trial run this morning. The battery weighs a ton, but Jack can lift that out with one hand. I will be ok as long as I don't have to walk with the parts. I just have to lift them out of the trunk and put them together and I don't know how to put them together either as Jack always does it. We started thinking of all the things I am going to have to do once he has his surgery and amazing how much the man does for me. I will just have to bite the bullet and do them. The biggest thing I think will be carrying the laundry upstairs but I can just go one step at a time and put the basket on the step and then pull myself up to the next step, etc. I have found I can slip the basket down the stairs like a sled when clothes need to be brought down.

Susan: We have a hospital like that called the Med. I have never even been in the thing. We have a lot of hospitals here. We have St Francis and St Francis Bartlett, Baptist, Baptist Women, and Baptist Germantown, The Med, Methodist and Methodist Germantown, and a bazillion clinics of every sort you can imagine. We have one section of town that is all medical buildings for everything from podiatry to cardiology. I got the Kindle Harry Potter book the day it came out. I put myself on the preorder list for Amazon a year ago. I found that though it is a stage play, it doesn't have a lot of stage directions to distract you. Let me know what you think of it. If I could figure out a way to share it with you, I would. He is just in so much pain with his hand and I can do nothing to help him. I just feel so bad and kind of guilty, but there is nothing I can do to help him.

Jean: I have silver and china. One set of china will go to one boy when he gets married and the other to the other grandson. I imagine I will just get rid of the silver as it is a small set and heavy and UGLY! I have never used it. I always find it fun and interesting when things like that happen, like going on the cruise and meeting a young couple from my hometown, which has 1600 people. Jack met a couple from his hometown too. I saw there is a huge tropical moisture front moving north and that is where all our rain is coming from. I just feel so sorry for those folk in LA. That doofus in the White House never even went down there nor did the witch running for president. Donald Trump and Gov Spense went down and handed out food and supplies and attended strategy meetings.

Everyone have a great Sunday. I am 3/4 done with the blanket and will move onto the little shoes and then I can wash and block what needs to be and then get them over to her. I decided to tell her I am giving them to her in place of her tips for the rest of the year.

Good morning, ladies! More 95 degree days and humidity but no rain. We are over 2 inches short of average rainfall for this month already.

Nothing much happening until Glory Bee on Thursday. We are making quilts for children receiving cancer treatment at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. Hopefully we'll be able to get 12 done this time.

Faye, have you ever thought about getting one of those carts for your scooter? I see them around here a lot. Then you wouldn't have to take it apart all the time. I see there will be 3 Harry Potter ebooks coming out September 6.

Jean, jeans and a sweatshirt! Don't even want to think about them. Since I don't have to go out again today, its shorts and a tank top for me.

Have a wonderful day.

Good Evening! It was 50 degrees this morning! The sun came out and it finally warmed up to 75 this afternoon; a very nice day. We went to early church and enjoyed special music by a group of four brothers. One sings in Bob's group so they come to sing every once in awhile. Today they sang a medley of old favorite hymns which most everyone knows. The gal who did the children's sermon came dressed as a fisherman complete with pole, tackle box, and real worms. She always comes up with the best ideas. This afternoon I sorted through a couple cupboards and put some things together for the rummage sale.

"Gma," I know you will enjoy your new furniture and accessories! I know what you mean about how much the guys help us. Bob mowed this afternoon, watered flowers, and cleaned the two bird baths. I don't even know how to start the mower, nor the snow blower for that matter. He is Mr. Fix-it when something doesn't work. This won't help you with the stairs, but Bob's mom tied a rope to her laundry basket and pulled it along the hall from her apt. to the laundry room. I noticed someone slammed O on FB for not going to Louisiana to offer help. It said he was on vacation playing golf. The baby blanket is beautiful!

Susan, the quilts for the children with cancer is a wonderful project for your group to do. My jeans and sweatshirt felt pretty darn good yesterday! I wore jeans again today too. I am not ready for cold weather!

I am heading off to bed. Hope you all enjoy a marvelous Monday tomorrow!

Good morning to you all. It is cool this morning, but I don't see or hear any rain. We went upstairs and watched tv around 8 and I fell asleep so I am well rested and ready to get that blanket done today and get my downstairs at least started. I have huge boxes sitting in the front hall and the pantry. We didn't want to put them out until Wednesday's trash since is has been raining so much. The trash guys pick up and anything that drops stays dropped so we try to get it set up so they take everything.

We had a nice breakfast yesterday though boy was it crowded at Perkins. The young gal who hostesses on the weekends is always so sweet and sits us close as she can. Yesterday she told the manager to seat us at this huge 6 person table because we would have had to walk clear to the back of the restaurant and she was having none of that. Actually, I was thankful as my knee has been giving me fits with all this rain.

We went to WM and I put the scooter together with Jack only using one hand to help and guide me and there was nothing to it. He can take the two heaviest pieces out with one hand because both the battery and the back wheel part have handles. He took one end and I took the other to get out the other base part and I could easily get the rest. It will be no problem to get it out and put it together after Jack has had his surgery. I am going to take it in to the hospital in case I have a lot of walking around. If my knee wasn't so bad I would love the exercise. I miss the walking, but I just can't do it anymore. It bums be out.

Tomorrow is my first eye appointment so I am anxious to get things rolling so I can see better.

Susan: We don't want to get the MKS scratched up with one of those platforms and it really isn't that bad to get it put together. Somewhere down the line when we just are too old to handle it we will have to do that, but for now it works on being in the trunk. We are going to a Cubs game in Cincinnati the end of Sept and I have a backpack that will fit over the back of the chair that we can put everything in that we want there. They have them you can buy at the scooter site, but the darn things are $60+ which is ridiculous! Hope you can make lots of quilts for the kiddies. It will be nice for them to have something while in the hospital.

Jean: I have been wearing jeans lately, but certainly not sweatshirts. I wore sandals yesterday and luckily the rain held off so I didn't get wet feet. I am not ready to wear closed toed shoes yet. Going down the stairs isn't the issue as I just slide it down like a ski slope. Even if it falls over at the bottom of the stairs is it ok. Going upstairs is the problem. I can do it, it just takes a lot of time. Maybe I should get a bungie cord and just "spring" it up the stairs. Don't know if they clean clothes would stay in though.

Everyone have a good Monday. I need to go and sweep dead bugs again. I don't know what kind of pigs we have next door, but about 2 months ago we started with roaches and they got really bad. I sprayed every day along all the baseboards, under the sink, etc and could not get them killed. I googled the best way to get rid of them and they said to use gel traps and they take the gel back to their nests on the legs and it kills the eggs and everything. I found them on Amazon and ordered them. I got them a week ago and put out 12 of them downstairs as there is nothing ever been seen upstairs. It didn't take 3 days and I was finding dead bugs on the floor. They were all small or tiny so I know the Raid was killing the adults, but not the new ones and this stuff is killing the new ones. I bought an extra package of syringes with gel to refill them in about 60 days, which is what they recommend. They are nasty, nasty bugs and I hate them, but I can't control how people live in this environment.

Good Afternoon! The sun is shining and the wind is blowing big time this afternoon. Counting went fine this morning until it came time to copy the checks and the copy machine ran out of ink last week. I found out later the secretary ordered the wrong ink. I was able to do my posting so that was good. A little more money for the gift shop this week. I am not kidding -- I can get the store room door open, barely, and have to move the wastebasket and small step stool in order to open the drawer where the money box is kept. We will close at noon next Monday, finish the packing, make the move on Tuesday, unpack and organize on Wednesday, then reopen on Thursday. Bob has a board meeting at 5 so supper may be cheese, crackers, and an apple for me. I bought some of the cotton candy grapes; they are good but after the deed thought $9 a bit pricey!

"Gma," Bob sprayed for bugs over the weekend. I have been seeing BIG spiders in the basement. The hummingbirds and Orioles are coming back through, heading south. I didn't think they came back until September but maybe they know we are going to have any early fall/winter. Glad you can put your scooter together. I just placed an Amazon order and it all should have been prime. Part of it will be shipped in a couple weeks and it had a shipping charge added. I sent an email right away so will see what happens. I know it should renew soon so hope that isn't the issue.

Not much else going on here. Hope you all enjoy a nice evening. I suppose we will be back to the politicians on tv since the Olympics are over.

Good Afternoon! It is cloudy and looks like it could rain any minute. I had a lab appointment early this morning and physical an hour later. All my numbers are good; I was hoping they would be but it's always reassuring to know for sure. I had to get a pneumonia booster and am good to go for another year, except for a med check in six months. The rest of my day has been a bust as far as getting anything done. I have a dental appointment Thursday and then I am caught up on check-ups again.

Nothing too exciting today. Hope you all are enjoying a nice day!

Good morning to you all. It might rain, it might not that's the forecast. It is still very sticky and muggy and the heat is climbing back up.

Jack's hand is really hurting him so he took a sick day today. He still has to deal with for 3 more weeks. I feel so sorry for him, but there isn't anything I can do to help him.

My eye appointment went fine. I was there about an hour and they did all these measurements and such. One of the receptionists took me into a little room and closed the door like it was some big secret, explained about what cataracts were, which of course I already knew, then ask me some questions I should have just refused to answer on principle, but I just answered them. They were personal questions and had nothing to do with my eyes or having surgery.

Jean: When you order on Amazon, make sure on the page with the photo and price that it has the prime symbol next to the price or it will say not covered by prime. I usually go back and look for something else if it isn't covered by prime. I mean I pay $100 a year for the thing and need to get my money's worth. I just bought another handbag and since Jack is home won't be able to sneak it past him today. I have to quit stopping on the QVC channel to see what they are selling. I don't imagine you sell a lot if people can hardly get in the door.

I finished the blanket last night and am going to start on the booties today I think. Everyone have a great day today.

Good Afternoon! It's been a nice day, a bit warmer but low humidity and no wind. We had a flash wind and rain storm blow through last night. The carry-out guy at the grocery store, this morning, said we got 2 1/2". I went for a much needed pedicure this morning, stopped for bread and milk on my way home, wrote a couple sympathy cards, and have two loads of laundry done and put away. Should be thinking of something for supper.

"Gma," I can imagine you will be glad to have your cataract surgery over so you can see properly again. I know how frustrating it was when my eyes were watering so badly and things were blurry. The question that took me by surprise was, "do you feel safe at home?" That was several years ago when I had toe surgery. I went back and checked my Amazon order and it was all listed as prime. When the email came verifying the order, part was being shipped from someone else and they added the shipping charge. I immediately canceled that part and their return email said the order was over an hour old and I couldn't cancel it. So I copied my email and sent to the company and Amazon both. The latest from Amazon was an apology and the order is cancelled. We'll see, I guess. The few gift shop items are still on the shelves, and the card rack is still up. I'm not ordering cards again until we get moved. Enjoy your new handbag!

I need to unload the dishwasher and scoop litter boxes before Bob gets home. Hope you all enjoy a nice evening!

Good morning to you all. I can't tell whether we are going to get rain today or not. It was nice and sunny here yesterday but in the mid 90's and really humid. We decided to go out to dinner after the ballgame was over on tv and had a nice dinner and then came home and was in for the evening. Jack went upstairs around 8 and I was watching the "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" movie so stayed downstairs. I think he went to bed early and I just slept downstairs so I wouldn't wake him up.

I have one bootie done and one to go. They're supposed to be little basketball shoes. There was a lot of weaving in colors and the dark colors are really hard for me to see to weave in with the cataracts. I took my glasses off and held my Iphone in my mouth with my bright flashlight on and did it. I couldn't get the phone to sit up so it would shine on the knitting.

Jean: They asked me hobbies, and on a scale from one to five how much of a perfectionist did my family and friends think I was. What the heck does that have to do with anything? I will be glad to get it done. I am hoping not only to see better but see things when they aren't in bright light. I have ordered a couple things and then found out they were coming from China!! One of them took 3 months!! So now before I order I check to see where it is shipping from, especially if the price is low. I am amazed at what people charge for stuff and expect you to pay. I remember I needed these knitting needles. It was one set of double points and one place wanted $67! Come one, really??? I found them for under $12. Jack didn't even ask me what was in the box. I am sure he knew as it was a large box from QVC,

Everyone have a good day. I am going to put the second bootie on the needles and get it started.

Good Afternoon! It's been another nice day in my neighborhood. I spent the morning having coffee with my friend who retired with me. I think we solved all the local and world problems. I had a dentist appointment right after lunch; no cavities and with $102 less in the checkbook I headed to WM. At least the school shoppers are now in school. It was busy but I got my orphan food and headed out the door. Now I need to decide what's for supper. Maybe it's Bob's night to cook.

"Gma," the bootie turned out so cute! I hope the mother will keep the set as a keepsake for her baby. That is a lot of work! I went to bed early (for me) last night and true to form, I was wide awake at 4 am. I try to stay awake but it seems like when it's dark outside earlier, I get sleepy earlier. Crazy! How do you tell where something will be shipped by someone besides Amazon?

Not much else newsy from here. I get to stay home tomorrow! Hope you all enjoy a nice evening!
