Angry So frustrated I could spit!

We have made sacrifices for my husband to work towards his Bachelor's degree for the last four years. Finally, he was all set to graduate in May, which is great as his GI entitlement runs out in February so we'll JUST squeak by.

Oh, but he got an email last week saying he's missing TWO semesters of foreign language. WTF! Our advisor told him from the beginning he didn't need those classes, we've submitted paperwork, including some of my awesome "four year plan" spreadsheets every friggin semester omitting foreign language. We saw the advisor TWO WEEKS ago and he failed to mention foreign language.

Then last week BOOM! he need these classes so he's going to have to take them Summer I and Summer II because he's already scheduled for 15 hours in the Spring with three studio art classes, one of which causes at least one student to have a mental break every semester. In addition, studio art classes are six hours in class for each one. There's no way he can fit it in the Spring.

I'm just SO frustrated and needed to vent that after 3 1/2 years diligent planning we're financially punished and responsible for someone else's mistake. This delays my husband getting a job in his field which makes it even longer until I can quit my job to go back full time.

Grrr!

[/vent]

that sucks! seems like his advisor was not doing his job!
is there any other way that he can fulfill that requirement? Does he speak another language fluently? Some schools will let you place out of that requirement if they can pass a test (IE I did that for my college).
either way, I feel for you, I can imagine that is frustrating!

Is there any way he can take the classes at a community college?

I'm sorry about your situation! That's incredibly frustrating!

Unfortunately he doesn't speak any foreign language fluently or else he could test out of it.

Regarding a community college, there is one with a winter interim, but we still have the problem of the spring semester (since two semesters of the same language are required). He's going to be over max load with another class and he can't take it at a community college over the summer because you have to be enrolled at the university in the semester you are graduating.

The lead advisor said she was going to speak to the "higher ups", I'm assuming the college dean. Depending on what they say I'll start firing off some emails/letters of my own. I've already researched contacts for the university dean of students, VP of academics, chancellor and president. They're going to be very sick of hearing from me.

Vent all you want. This is the place for it. Who knows? This may put your hubby in the right place at the right time in the long term? Or even save you for a better career or life event you just don't see coming. I'm 61 and this has often happened to me. I'm proud of you for coming here rather than the food. Money worries is a hard trigger for me also.

I feel your pain - when I was in college my advisors were virtually useless. The best advice I can give you is to make sure he gets his plan signed every time he has an advising appointment, that way he'll have written documentation of someone else's mistake.

This makes me really angry! As in how could the advisor miss something as major as two semesters of foreign language????

I wish you luck in straightening this out.

It happens all the time in my college. Especially when the curriculum suddenly changes. From the same advisor, I've been told that I need to take 1 humanities course, or 2 of them. I'm never certain. It's because my semester is diff???

We'll never know. I'm sorry to hear about you guys!! That royally sucks!!!
