Temptations at work... how to say 'NO'!

  • *I'm going to talk about food in this thread... if you are prone to reading something and then wanting it... turn back now!!* But i sure could use some help.

    Hello Everybody!

I work in a frozen yogurt shop in my city. The yogurt only has 120 calories for a half cup, but that's not really where the danger lies. It's the toppings. Oreos, sprinkles, peanut butter cups, gummy bears, mochi, vanilla wafers, coconut, nuts, alligator crunch (a mix of cashews, coconut, and brown sugar- 150 cals in ONE OUNCE). Poop... all of my favorite things right in front of me. Now... how in the heck do I stay away from all of this crap?

Does anyone have any kind of advice?

    you guys are awesome!
  • Frozen yogurt and mochi are my weakness!!!! I know the yogurt is not bad, but I have been wondering about the mochi. When I started reading this I never imagined it would be about frozen yogurt and now I am CRAVING it!!!!
  • Hmm. Get another job?

I'd have a dreadful time resisting all of those things too. Telling yourself you can never ever have any of them isn't the best idea, because of the nasty tendency of overly restricting to lead to overdoing it - not much good if you manage to stay away from them for a week or two and then snap and eat the whole shop.

I'd probably set myself a limit - if I get through the week without nibbling on anything, then on Friday I can treat myself (within reason; maybe avoid the brown sugar topping regardless!). I'd spend the week constructing the most decadent mix of toppings in the world and enjoying the anticipation, and then when Friday rolled round, I'd try to rein myself in and go for tasty but not excessive, rather than the eighty million calorie monstrosity I'd been thinking of all week. And I'd alter my eating habits for the rest of that Friday, have a slightly smaller lunch and so on, to make space for the treat calories.

    Good luck!
  • TCBY?!?!

"Get another job" comes to mind from me, too.
  • What kind of plan are you on right now? Can you incorporate 200-250 calories in your plan 2-3 times a week? Although that may be slightly excessive, I'm sure after the first couple of weeks you would probably start to get tired of it anyways... maybe... But frozen yogurt with some fruit a couple times a week can't hurt if you can "afford" it.
  • ugh..i can remember when i worked at friendly's (ice cream shop here on the east coast) and all night i would nibble on reeses pieces, m&ms, even brownies. mistake orders were up for grabs, or sometimes i would just make myself a milkshake.

i was in high school then, and still somehow miraculously thin. (or, normal weight anyway..it just wasn't an issue)

i know what its like to be surrounded by unhealthy food all day. right now, i work in a restaurant and i'm surrounded by bar food and burgers. every now and then i'll succumb, but i bring my own food to work and make sure that i never get ravenously hungry. i make better decisions when i'm fed. try and limit yourself to just the fro-yo no toppings if you absolutely must have some. maybe even get some skinnycow or WW ice cream bars to have instead. just a thought.

    good luck!
  • You can try telling yourself "eh, not today."

You work there. The stuff is available to you every day. It's not so special, since you have access to it any time you want. So it's not that big a deal to just say "eh, not today. Maybe I'll have some tomorrow."

Try that. Then try it again tomorrow. And again the day after that. You get the idea. Maybe every once in a while you can enjoy a small portion if it fits into your plan. But most days, try saying "not today."

This is how I deal with nearly every temptation that comes my way. Very few eating opportunities are so rare that I'm really missing something that I won't get another chance to try. You're at the opposite extreme - the stuff is in front of you every day so what's the big deal to pass on it just this once? Try thinking about it that way.
  • I work at a cinema and there's a Ben and Jerry's counter there. One time someone said "Oh my g0d how do you cope working here with all this delicious ice cream?!" Well... it's my job. I serve food. I'm not the one selecting it, I don't eat it - I serve it. That's your job now too, start adapting your mind to an employee not a customer.

Bring your own meals to work. I've seen people buy cinema/coffee shop food almost every shift. What a waste of money when you can bring something with you! Every now and then I get tempted to buy a coke or get a brownie, but on my break I just want to sit down and eat my packed lunch not go out there and buy more food.

If you get stuff for free, well then just remember that you've brought food with you and it's a waste if you don't eat it.
  • You all are so amazing! Right now I am counting calories. I have worked at this place for 2 years, so I am pretty tired of the yogurt itself, but who could get tired of oreos?! haha! I have been bringing meals to eat so I am not starving.

Thank you all for the advice. This site is amazing!
