Default Does coffee make you stall?

Hi!

This is day FOUR stuck on 153! Uh!!

I've never had a stall this long. The only thing I changed was adding A LOT of caffeinated coffee. Like 6 huge cups a day. Equates to 8 cups regular sized.

I usually drink a lot of DECAF with no ill effects.

My scale is also driving me nuts! This morning it finally said, I was 153.1. Not 152, but close enough.

Then I weighed about 30 minutes later and it was 153.3, then I weighed after a BM thinking, "Oh boy! I'm going to see a drop!"

Nope! I went up to 153.9. Huh!????

I haven't eaten or drank anything yet????

Ok, it could be my scale, but I've seen things like this before with that scale so can only assume I'm sucking calories out of the air!?

So can it be the coffee slowing me down? I am a bit caffeine intolerant as I get way too jittery if I have more than one cup in a row and want to stop anyway, but seriously could this be it?

So other than the scale, whatcha think?

From what I understand, caffeine and artificial sweeteners can cause stalls. I don't fully comprehend the reason why -- something about how fat molecules bind to caffeine and aspartame and make it harder to lose, but the short answer is yes.

Four days isn't a stall. I've never known anyone to stall due to caffeine, and I sure haven't.

It's most likely water weight, as long as your in a calorie deficit.

Four days is a stall for me. I'll take the first answer. I switched to decaf. I'll let you know what happens in case anyone comes along who is having the same problem.

Thanks! Those were words I need to hear!

Hey, anyone who starts their blog with "BS" has to be a kindred spirit. I like your blog! I'm off to read more.

Coffee doesn't hurt my weight loss. A lack of coffee might, but I have no intention of finding out.

I think any change of routine can throw off weight loss for anyone though.

If you consider four days a stall than you have been very fortunate.

Prepare yourself. Typically the close you get to goal the more likely your weight will stall.

This doesn't mean you're not still losing fat - but weight can be tricky and generally the less you have to lose the more tricky weight can be. Again, not to be confused with fat loss.

You aren't in a stall until you've been the same weight for 6 weeks.

You are experiencing real life weight loss. The body doesn't lose all the time no matter what you do. Set real expectations.

I really don't know about is coffee can make you stall, but i wanted to comment on the scale thing. Mine does the exact same thing! Makes me so mad! My mom bought a wii fit w/ the balance board thing a while back and stopped using due health issues affecting her balance..anyway I have it now and I actually use that to weight. It seems to be much more accurate.

The scales that change everytime I step on them only cost about 20 bucks though...I guess you get what you pay for with scales?

The one thing that helps me is coffee. I drink a cup of coffee before I go the gym,and it ramps me up so much I work out like a beast! I usually have a loss on the weeks where I drink my coffee before my workout. Perhaps since you are not used to drinking that much caffeine, the diuretic effects of it have you retaining fluid? Maybe up your water consumption just to make sure...? Just a thought.

Thanks. This is a digital scale and was a bit pricey. Maybe it's just getting old? I've had it for about two years.

As far as a six weeks stall, I might shoot myself. Hope I don't have to.

As far as being realistic, my reality right now is bouncing around inside 153lbs which is a physical impossibility with the amount of calories I am eating at the moment. It's also fascinating!

I am very honest and tedious about my calorie count. I keep insanely meticulous records. I've lost weight before and know I "stalled" (apparently mini-stalls) in the past. I just wasn't expecting this. It is usually due to something I changed. I know this because I keep the type of records I can refer to. The only thing that I have changed in the last four days was adding a huge amount of coffee. Also, I did just come off a 4.1lb loss in five days.

Maybe my body is just taking a break. Still, I'm a firm believer you can't extract calories out of the air so it must be water retention. Or the caffeine really messed with my system. In any event, it is NOT possible to not burn calories, unless you are dead.

I'm actually writing all this for me to hear. It's like my body has gone to war with me and I am determined to win. If it's still at 153 tomorrow, I'll laugh in defiance and keep going. It can't hang on to this water/whatever forever. It knows I know that because we've been here before.

The longest stall I ever had was for a week, and that's when I got within 10 pounds of my goal at 125lbs...and it did seem like forever to get those last 10 pounds off. So I was expecting it to happen when I got closer to 135.

Who knows, maybe I'll drop a couple pounds of water tomorrow. I usually have a pretty big loss after "stalling" or rather slowing down for a few days.
