Default Steel cut oats calorie question

Ok--math has always been a weak spot for me...and I'm just trying to make sure I'm correct on my calculations. Usually when I make Steel cut oats I make it one serving at a time, so I don't ever have to do any calculations other than dumping the 1/4 cup or 40 gram serving into a dish on my food scale, and walah! 150 calorie serving. Well, this time around, I did this..

So, one serving of steel cut oats is 40 grams (dry) and that equals 150 calories. I wanted to make 4 servings, so, I measured 160 grams into a plastic bowl. ( 4 Servings x 40 grams= 160 grams)

Then I dumped it into a pot, with 4 cups of water (water=0 calories). I let the steel cut oats cook as directed, for about 30 minutes. Then once it was cooled I dumped the finished product back into a plastic bowl on my food scale, and it weighed 932 grams. So, to me, it would make sense that I'd take 932 grams and divide it into 4 servings, which comes out to be 233 grams. And that would mean, my 233 gram serving equals 150 calories.

Does that make sense? Or did I completely mess it up? Ha...math, oh how I loathe you!

As long as you used the same plastic bowl both times or tared it out, that's it! You got it!

(And math is NOT my friend, either. I'm really glad you only had two ingredients and one was 0 calories!)

Thank you! I thought I had it right, but after I'd done the math I was second guessing myself!

And yeah--same bowl...but the Tare button is my friend and I always make sure to zero out after my bowl or plate is down on the scale, before I add food!

Use that specific math for this batch only. You can't be sure that you're consistently burning off the same amount of water each time you cook oats.

I can't see why the water matters, nor why you need to weigh the finished product. Just tot up the calories from the ingredients. As far as I'm aware, they're not undergoing a chemical change while being cooked that would alter the calorie content in any significant way. You're needlessly overcomplicating this!

Oddly enough, I have just sat down with a nice bowl of date porridge.

I think she's weighing the finished product because she's making more than one serving. She isn't sure how to portion out one of those four servings she made to be sure that it still adds up to only 150 calories.

Thanks for your feedback everyone--I appreciate it. I'll definitely make sure to do the same procedure for different batches, thanks for pointing that out!

Also, just to be clear, I was making multiple servings, and that's why I measured the end product, even though I know the water doesn't affect the calorie count, it does affect the weight.

Thanks again chickies! Can't believe what a wonderful, great big serving of steel cut oats I can eat for 150 calories. Great way to start my day, thanks to your help!

Just measure initially and then divide into 4 bowls evenly. No need to make it more difficult than that.

Yes, I don't think you really need to measure out the servings if you make this again. The ingredients will be evenly distributed throughout the product, you can just do it by eye. Just put it into bowls that are the same size and shape, otherwise it can be hard to tell!
