You have such a pretty face

  • Ok so FINALLY people at work are starting to notice my loss. Today my boss who is truly a fantastic lady says to me (in front of several co-workers) "Steph, you have such a pretty face and I am glad we are starting to see it" Ok I know I have a lot to lose, but seriously was that necessary? Maybe I am just being oversensitive?? Have any of you had someone say something like that? I am sure it was said with good intentions, but I could not help feeling a little shocked by the whole thing.
  • I think the whole "you have such a pretty face" thing is just so rude. They might as well finish the sentence -- "you have such a pretty face but your body sure is ugly". Well, er, thanks for the compliment!

If my boss said that to me, especially in front of coworkers, I would really want to say, why the heck to you care if my face is pretty, or puffy, or just plain ugly? What's it to ya?

I'm sure she meant it to be nice, but that would irk me. It's so demeaning! Why not just say, wow, you're looking really great, congratulations on the weight loss!
  • I am sure she meant well. I think it can be awkward for some people to mention another person's weight loss. I am sure she thought she was complimenting you and her intentions were good. So, my advice is take what she said as a compliment (albeit poorly worded) and move on.

    Cheers,

    J
  • Sometime people are down right rude and sometime they mean good from the bottom of their hearts,But your beautiful and always remember that . No matter what, don't let them steal your thunder so smile and tell them I was just thinking the same thing about you too, and smile (that will always make them think twice before opening their big mouth.)
  • I think her comment was well intended but badly worded. Really, what she was trying to say to you is that your natural beauty is really coming out for all to see. That's a good thing! Try to see it like that!
  • I guess I see the comment as more of a compliment rather than something rude. Yes I have had people say things like that to me, but I never thought it rude or hurtful.

I agree with Cglass...it is more of a natural beauty coming out, it just wasn't worded the best way, but yet I think her heart was in the right place and she was trying to praise you and encourage you.

Sometimes you have to look past awkward moments and look for the good. I mean we ALL have those moments. I mean just the other day I said something that was worded badly and yet it wasn't meant the way it came out. It was still a positive comment, but still...sometimes we aren't as graceful as we would like to be.
  • Oooh, that's a little uncomfortable. Without a doubt this woman had great intentions. But she didn't think before she spoke that it may come across badly and cause you discomfort.

Congrats on your weight loss thus far and keep up the great work. Just keep at it, keep on going, no stopping, just continuing - and there will be MANY more compliments coming your way - hopefully worded a lot better.
  • People have been saying that to me MY WHOLE LIFE!!!! Even my Mother-In-Law said one time, "You have such a beautiful face, if you could just work on this" and she patted my belly a few times!!!!!! I have also had about a million and a half people ask me when my baby is due!!! It is hard to think of clever things to say in the moment!! It is frustrating, but... I think... A bad compliment is better than NO compliment!! Congrats on your weight loss!! Keep on, keeping on!!!

I second this. I hate that supposed compliment. And for her to say it in front of everyone u work with is not cool either cos u know some of them were probably thinking, how sad. I know I would've been thinking that.lol. U have accomplished alot, keep up the hard work.
  • Yeah, I've had people step all over their words trying to give me a compliment about my weight loss. I've decided to assume they meant the best and accept the compliment for what it is.

    Congrats!
  • Why can't people realize that all they have to do is say: You look great! Why do they have to couch it in something like that?
  • I would take it as a compliment, but to me it is still kind of thoughtless to say such things in front of other people...it may have been a bit more tactful if the two of you had been alone.

Congratulations on your progress so far
  • My mom and grandmother used to say this to me all of the time when I was younger & told me I just needed to lose a little weight to be beautiful (I wasn't even overweight but they thought I was) & to this day that phrase makes me so mad.
