Default Knee Injury Rant

Never before have I had a knee injury like this. A nagging, sticking-on pain that's come and gone for three weeks.

I lost 50 pounds, and then I hurt my knee!

If I end up going to the doctor, I'm terrified of the possible statements. "Your weight" "someone your size" "etc"

Absolutely infuriating! I got down to a weight where I could run with my kids and skip with the baby and fly up the stairs. Then, I hurt my knee and now I'm walking around with a limp and a brace. So demoralizing!

That sucks, sweetie,

More than likely it will go away if you take it easy, but if the pain gets worse, or lingers much longer, see the doc no matter what they say. Maybe bring up that you have lost 50 lbs. right off the bat so you are not worried about it.

Also, my bf has a problem where if he loses weight his joints hurt for a while. Then his body figures out what's going on, and it goes away. Could be something similar.

As someone who dealt with doctor after doctor dismissing knee problems because of my weight, I totally sympathize. BUT...you can INSIST on getting the treatment you need. As in, "I understand that knee pain can come from being overweight, but I've lost 50 lbs from my highest and I'm interesting in discussing what is going on, since it didn't hurt like this 50 lbs ago". Repeat until you're listened to. And if you aren't? Get thee to another doctor.

Knee injuries happen to skinny people too! The first time I dislocated my kneecaps I weighed 140, and have continued to do so for the last 15 years. Even if you weighed 600 lbs, a good doctor wouldn't ignore your pain because of your weight.

I'd go to the doctor.

I just want to second Mandalinn's advice. I didn't push enough and by the time I had surgery my knee was bone on bone in places. Even if it is caused by weight it still needs help. A good PT can start you with strengthening exercises and should give you tips for making your regular work-outs easier on your knee.

Please don't let the fear of your doctor mentioning weight (as the cause of your pain) keep you from seeking treatment! To be honest, being overweight hasn't ever helped anyone's knees. I think we can all agree on that. But I would mention your weight loss and increased activity level. It doesn't matter what he thinks personally, but it does show that you are comitted to making yourself healthier.

I have had knee issues and have had two surgeries. My knee is bothering me again and I may have to go back to the doctor soon. Honestly, I look forward to telling him about my weight loss/exercise program. He suggested it over a year ago and I finally decided it was time.

Here's to good knee health!!

Gosh, I could have written you post (minus having kids and adding I don't have health insurance as reason #2 for not going to the doctor). It really is SO frustrating. I feel your pain (quite literally).
