Default Losing Weight Before Trying to Conceive

Hey guys. I wanted to see if there are others like me on this site who are trying to lose weight and get in shape before TTC. I am at 225, and I want to get down to at least 150 before trying. I also want to be in the best shape possible to be able to have the energy to care for a newborn/toddler, and right now that is SO not the case. I get tired playing with my dog!

I also want to try and avoid getting certain complications like Gestational Diabetes and Pre-eclampsia, since being overweight increases my chances of getting it. My sister lost two babies (due to a blood disorder that she just found out she has), and I have witnessed how incredibly hard it was for her, and I want to try and prevent something from happening to me.

So, are there any other ladies who are in the same boat?

Yes, I'm in! I am in Weight Watchers, I've lost about 25 lbs since starting this summer. I have two toddlers already and I can say that my second pregnancy, while uneventful, was certainly more difficult due to the excess weight that I never lost after having my first. And nearly 3 years after the second was born, I actually weigh more than I do after I delivered him. That's no good. I need to get on a healthier path before I go into the next pregnancy, not only to make the pregnancy easier, but to hopefully prevent me from just letting myself go as completely as I did in the first two pregnancies.

I can relate. My Fiance and I have been together for almost five years, we are getting married next year and a year or so after that we would love to start our own family. I wanted to lose weight to be healthier all round but, trying to conceive was a big part of the overall reason. I want to incubate my child in a healthy body and give he/she the best start possible and I plan to continue eating well and still work out and do prenatal yoga (obviously not to lose weight), that whole 'eating for two" thing is a load of bologna and I think too many people use it as an excuse to pig out, I've seen this with my own eyes. Sure you have cravings but, just like in weight loss you have to learn to not always give in to those food cravings. I've seen friends who are quite overweight experience problems during pregnancy such as preeclampsia and hypertension- I don't want to risk the health of our future child(ren) and also my own health. I think it's fantastic that you are getting in shape to become a mother, good for you- very admirable!

Here is a great link with lot's of info in regards to overweight women and pregnancy: http://ezinearticles.com/?If-You-are...nant&id=176934

Thank you for your input, ladies! I'm happy to hear of others, who like me, want to get healthier before pregnancy. Another (more superficial) reason for me wanting to lose weight is the fact that I want to be able to wear cute maternity clothes, and not feel incredibly self-conscious because of my size! Also, I can't imagine carrying around even more weight around. I agree that some women use the excuse of eating for two to allow themselves to gain a lot, and I really don't want that to happen to me.

I want to get my eating habits and activity level in check so my future child will have a good role model. I definitely do not want to teach my child to emulate me!

Hi! I am also trying to lose weight before I have another one! Gaining lots of weight thru the pregnancy runs in the family...When I got pregnant with my son, I gained 70lbs...and only dropped 20 of it after having him, then turned around and gained it back! I totally don't want to gain another 70lbs on top of what I am now!! I feel like i'll have a heart attack or something lol. I did have all the difficulties when I was pregnant..exp..gestational diabetes, etc...ended up having to have a c-section. Dont want to go thru the same difficulties again, and even more difficulties than my 1st. So I am waiting til i loose, and enjoy for a while, than conceive!

If you're losing to conceive, please, please, please stay on a mega-birth control regime! I mean, pills, condoms, sperm-bombs...everything. I lost 30 pounds (255 to 225) and immediately conceived (despite being on hormonal b/c). Our plan had been similar. We were going to TTC once I hit 180. But...losing weight also helps your reproductive system become more active. D'oh!

I'm not planning on having a baby any time soon (someday!), but I do plan on being at a healthier weight when I do conceive. I definitely don't want to conceive being overweight or obese. I think it's a wonderful idea to lose weight before trying for a baby. A lot of women are actually in denial that they need to lose weight before conceiving. Or they only start to worry about it after they give birth.

My plan isn't to lose the 80 lbs I have left before trying to conceive, though the desire to conceive does play a role, I think, it why I seem to be doing so well. I want to be healthier than I am now when I finally do have children, but I'm not going to put it off just because I'm not at a certain weight. But it's about more than just the weight. It's about completely overhauling a lot of my dietary habits. I'm cooking all of my meals, no more tv dinners like when I was growing up. And let me tell you, having full control over what goes into my body is a pretty fantastic experience. The hard part will come when DH makes it home and I have to stop him from bringing fast food or excessive sweets into my house. XD
