to the bright and shiney December exercise thread! We're making exercise a habit, giving ourselves some accountability, and getting healthier in the process!
In this thread, we track the number of MINUTES we exercise for the month -- whether it's walking or swimming or sweaty housework! Most of us set goals for ourselves (I personally will not exercise much without a goal). If you are a goal-setter, early in the month set your own goal! If you're just getting started, feel free to start with a smaller number of minutes (I did!), maybe just a few hundred. It seems easier for many of us to build on the habit rather than meet a very high goal right away. However, you can also just jump right in without a goal, and you can join us anytime in the month!
In 2007 the 300+ club exercised 205,352 minutes. Let’s break that record!
To keep track, just add your minutes to the existing group’s minutes. If you’re new, look at what other people are doing – it’s pretty easy to figure out! To help everyone keep things straight, please note the OLD minutes and the number of NEW minutes you are adding, such as
Group total ~ 500 + 50 = 550 minutes
We've made a great start and I'd love to see us hit 15K minutes for October!!! What do you say chicks and roosters??
Minutes so far:
19,474 January
12,537 February
16,953 March
22,397 April
23,779 May (a record!!)
19,680 June
23,366 July (so close to a record!)
18,646 August
18,315 September
14,877 October
16,350 November
206,374 thru November (ALREADY A NEW RECORD!)
Let's SHATTER the old record!! Be a part of it!!!
EDITED TO ADD: With 10480 min for the month, our 2009 exercise total is: 216,854 min!!!!
Last month was the first month since August I didn't make my exercise goal. My internship is 10 hours a day, so that, plus classes 3 times a week leaves me no time at ALL. So I'm committing to 1,200 mins this month, and hopefully I can get them in! At least I'm running around/walking all day at my Internship, so I'm not completely sedentary. lol. And my Internship will be over mid-December.
Asked a friend how she was whittling 2 inches off of her waist every month...
Group Total: 210 + 90 = 300 minutes. Personal Total: 150/1800.
My friend with the rapidly shrinking waist replied, "stationary bicycle 30 minutes in the morning, in the evening about 60 minutes using a combination of weights, bicycling, hula hoop and steps." She also plays about 2 hours of tennis every other weekend. She's at 1600 daily caloric intake.
Not too long ago you could hear me complain that as a disabled single mom of a small daughter, I couldn't exercise. I had no time and little mobility. Six months ago, I couldn't walk across the room without becoming ill. I fell often. Even tying my shoe laces caused me to huff and puff and sweat and shake. Life was very sad.
Today, after 6 months of working with a movement coach/personal trainer who is certified in Z-Health and RKC (Russian Kettlebell Challenge), I can walk, clean my home, cook my favorite, hot, healthy meals from scratch, care for my service dog and pet cat but, most important of all, I can enjoy my athletic 4 yo daughter.
Today's cardio and strength training = 90 minutes:
Walked dog, cleaned cat litter, scrubbed kitchen floor, cooked dinner incl. grating cheese in Tai Chi Horse Stance, cleaned kitchen incl. squats to pick up things after chopping and while waiting on water to boil, folded laundry in Tai Chi neutral stance and lifted my 40 lb daughter repeatedly until muscle fatigue set in. (Remembering that anything I lift that fatigues me in 8 or less reps is HEAVY lifting.)
Thank you God for all those who have empowered me to transform my body, my mind and my life.

RW -- That is an amazing and inspiring story! You should tell it out on the forum -- most people won't see (or respond) to it here. They don't look back very far, just post minutes and go. I think many would be inspired by you!!
