Post Looking for ideas for husband starting SB

After six weeks of my doing SBD and his noticing a change in me, my husband has decided to start SBD next week. I was wondering if any of your husbands were doing the plan with you and if you had any suggestions to get him started and keep him going. He’s fine for breakfast. He loves eggs and I’ve already gotten him to half his eggs with egg beaters. He’s not much for ground turkey - I love turkey burgers and turkey chili. I guess I’m just looking for some ideas to help him get started and like this plan. It’ll be so much easier for me if I can get rid of the chips and ice cream in the house! We have a 6 year old daughter, but she’s a pretty healthy eater (it’s sad when your child is a better eater than you!) and is happy with fruit, cheese and healthy choices for her snacks. Thanks for any ideas!

Include him with planning the meals. When my son was home I'd browse the recipe's and have him approve of them before including them for the week. Once in awhile I'd just make something that although it had a little of something he didn't like I'd make it anyway, and a lot of times he'd be fine. As for snacks... get creative. The tastier the treat the less likely he'll want the chips. Oh, and if he goes shopping with you make sure you have a SB healthy meal prior to going. This stops you from bringing the "no no's" home.

For most people, the key to successful eating is keeping it interesting. Who would want the same thing day in and day out? Most people can't handle it.

And for starter choices? The BEST recipe on these forums is the P1 (and all phases thereafter) FAMOUS TACO BAKE!!!!! You get him on that and he'll want it time and time again! Pesto in place of the paste makes a big difference too!

good luck.

The SB forum has great recipes. My BF and I started the diet together 5 weeks ago. I lost about 11 lb so far, he lost about 15 lb - 1 lb away from his goal weight. The recipes page has great ideas on more substantial meals. My favorite is the zucchini lasagna. My BF pairs the lasagna with a large salad and vegetable soup. I only have it with a small salad.

However, we over indulged for the last 2 days. It's hard to diet when we go out with friends a lot. So we are going back to Phase 1.5 (Phase 1 with 1 serving of fruit or carbs a day).

My hubby is doing SBD with me. In fact, he's lost two pounds more than me! DH is happy to eat the same things over and over. I make a big pot of chili, and he'll eat it for lunches all week. I keep individual bags of peanuts, pistashios (spelling???), and sunflower seeds for him. He also eats spoons of peanut butter. I keep a big bowl of fruit on the island. I have to push veggies, because he'd be happy to never have one.

I'm with your hubby regarding ground turkey. Yuck! We try to be thrifty. I don't buy ground sirloin, but just regular gound beef. After I brown it, for whatever I'm making, I drain and rinse it. For burgers, I use lean beef.

Will your DH start with Ph1? Are you going back to ph1 with him?

DH is doing the diet with me. As for breakfast, i always have hard boiled eggs ikn the house. Sometimes he will grab one of those. For a while, he would go to Subway and get a salad with all of the veggie fixings (and some ham or chicken). Now, I make him a large salad for lunch (much cheaper). Dinner, I use a lot a variety. There are some great flavorful recipes on here that you feel like you shouldn't be eating. DH rarely complains about a dinner meal I make.

redflatshoe - That lasagna looks yummy *runs off to find the recipe*

My DH does SB with me, although not really by choice - it's just that I am the cook, and he eats what I eat! He doesn't really mind though because he loves veggies, and he's happy that he gets a home-cooked meal most nights now, when it used to not happen about as often as it happened. Also, he's type II diabetic, so it's good for him to eat this way. At his last physical, he had a different doctor than usual and she said that she would not have known from his test results that he was diabetic if he had not told her.

Anyway, he loves chicken so a couple of his favorites are the Mediterannean Chicken and the Chicken Divan. He also really loves the lasagna made with zuchinni or eggplant "noodles". Although he's not big on Mexican food, he enjoys the taco bake. Pork Diane and Blue Moon Burgers were also a big hit with him. We have discovered that he adores Spaghetti Squash Deep Dish Italian Pie and Butternut Squash Soup (he'd never tasted either of those squash).
By the way, he will also tell you he HATES turkey in any form. What he doesn't realize is that I go half and half with the turkey/ground beef in meatloaf and chili, etc. He's never noticed. I recently made Swedish meatballs that were all turkey and he didn't know.

Default SBD and Hubbies

I was morbidly obese and housebound, and decided to have WLS. I wanted a life-plan after the surgery to keep me on track. I decided that I could and would do well on SBD since I'm a meat-eater and wouldn't be able to tolerate sugars. My DH started SBD after I was about 9 months out and has lost 44 lbs since summer and kept it off. I'm so happy not to have to cook two meals any more. I feed him homemade greek style yogurt in the morning with berries with some kind of fiber bar or granola; whole grain pancakes with protein powder and SF syrups he can heat up at work, low-carb tortillas with omelets, scotch oats with protein powder and dried fruit with yogurt......Lunches: Usually whatever we have had for supper. He has a little tool-box looking thing that is a slow cooker that he plugs into his mail truck and reheats stuff. Favorite fast food for him is Wendy's chili and a roasted chicken wrap (minus the wrap), side salads and he packs his own dressing. We don't really do without anything that we did before....I just alter it to fit the plan. We do have pizza, but I make whole grain crusts and turkey pepperoni, ice cream -- fat-free, nas yogurt from Krogers, and he makes floats with SF sodas, I freeze yogurt with berries and take it out and keep it on the counter for a while and add bananas and SF carmel ice cream topping (drizzled) and lite cool whip. We eat ricotta - SF chocolate pudding parfaits and George Stella's New York style cheesecake. I have to keep something sweet for him or he goes nuts. He eats apples and bananas, occasional popcorn. My DD started it two and half weeks ago and has lost 12 lbs. She was on low-fat for a month, didn't lose a pound, and was starving to death. Just think about what he really like and try to find a way to SB it! LOL! Potatoes are a very, very rare thing in our house and that used to be an everyday thing. Try the cauliflower "mac and cheese" of george stella. Bread....We occasionally eat whole grain bread, but I make it myself, but it is a rare thing also. I can't keep the GKs' chips, brownies and stuff like that around where he can see them or they call him. For Valentines Day, I got him small bag of peanut M&Ms and he said, "I thought they would be better." Progress - YEAH! We are working on him not doing too much diet Dew, with so much protein we will be prone to kidney stones and right now he needs to up his water. Good luck to you, the cook, and your DH.

LOL! That's my situation too. DH was diagnosed with Type II diabetes a few months ago so he doesn't object to the SBD meals at all.

He doesn't really understand portion control or only having so much of certain things (like starches) each day. I don't think he would do so well on SB on his own.

Thanks for all the input! I think hubby is going to try P1. I've tried to stick with P1.5 since I'm only 6 weeks in. I think to some extent he's also going to have to accept that he's going to have to try some different things and decide what he likes. He told me that he hates eggplant and won't go there. But I'll have to try the zucchini lasagna and see how that goes. He's not much on beans, but I'll try the taco bake and hopefully we'll find a couple of things that he likes. He definitely already likes that I'm cooking more and we're eating out less. Thanks again chicks!!

I do a lot with refried beans, the taco bake, a shellless taco salad, and on phase 2 i do burritos or baked chimichangas using them. My DH is on SB too and if it wasnt by choice in the first place he would be anyway cause i buy th groceries and to the cooking and most of the time i plate the meals. He takes leftovers for lunch and for snack he loves raw cabbage and cauliflower. He was having huneybuns and chips from the vending machines at work.
