Glad you are delurking - and from another biker.

Does your new gym have spin classes? I'm a lil biased 'cause I teach spin, but I swear it's hecka fun.

Maybe just start with just going once a week....and build from there.

Hi Ryan. Welcome to the world of posters. Just because there are not a lot of men on here does not mean we don't like to hear the male point of view and get your input. We are all trying to change our lives to eat better and live healthier. That is why we come here -- that is not gender specific!

Hi Ryan, I'm glad you crawled out of the closet.

Being one of the minorities here is probably in your favor...you'll get even more support. I think the more you join in the more you'll get out of it.

Good for you for making the decision to change your life. You said you are teaching your gf some bad habits. Maybe you can talk her into joining the gym too, or you two can start walking or running together every day. That would be a fun thing to share. That and learning how to eat healthier.

I think a good place to start is to figure out how you are going to eat from now on. If you look around at the different diet forums you may be able to figure out what is doable for you. I am on South Beach and LOVE it but some people prefer calorie counting or other plans. I don't think that anyone can really tell you what will be best because it is such a personal choice. If you have any questions about something in particular, you can ask on that forum and I'm sure someone will try to help.

As for the exercise- I know I used to be embarrassed to go to the gym. I think I finally realized a couple of things. 1. It was no secret that I needed to lose weight. At least I was there doing something about it! and 2. No one else was really paying much attention to me since they are pretty focused on themselves. - I think it would be great if you could workout with your GF but if it makes you uncomfortable, then don't feel bad. DH tried going with me in the beginning. He was trying to be supportive and it was sweet but it was also very distracting for me. I actually enjoy my workout time and it is my time alone. I am a SAHM though and that is about all of the alone time I get.

Dude - about the gym....most of the people in there are too busy working on their own thing to worry about you. They might look like they don't have a weight problem...but believe me - a lot of them have been where you are now.

I got a LOT of info about working out from Jillian Michaels' book "Winning by Losing" - I also love Stumptuous.com (it's not all about chicks), and Dave Draper's site

Anyway the point is it's not gonna happen for you unless you get past the embarrassment and do something about it. You are paying for the gym - get your monies worth.

As for eating plans - there is info about almost any plan here. Find something that fits how you like to eat and start building healthy habits.

And keep asking questions.
