Default Tom?

Pretty sure I know the answer but would love some reassurance. Anyone else ever gained 7 pounds? I don't think I've been eating all that much but I've been freezing so maybe I've been eating more soups than I realized...

Whenever I'm dealing with TOM it does show a weight difference, so I try not to weigh myself until its over and then usually the weight goes back down, or sometimes will have a small gain.

I can gain anywhere from 3-10 lbs over TOM just from water weight and bloating. As long as you know you've been eating healthily and working out and keeping on track, I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks! I was pretty sure that's all it is, but it's still hard to see it on the scale! I haven't been eating any differently that I can think of, and still with my trainer twice a week who really works me hard so hopefully next week it'll all go down!

I agree with the others.
Also, you mentioned eating more soups - which can contain lots of salt - it might be adding to your water weight gain. So, keep that in mind!

I have a hard time exercising too, truthfully I haven't gone at all except for my twice weekly trainer time...it's an hour at a time so that's not too bad but still hard.
I actually do all my soups from scratch so I try to watch the salt but I'm sure you're right that I got too much.
Thanks for all the support! I'm gonna go try to drink tons of water lol. On that note, does anyone else have huge difficulties drinking a lot of water? I went to an ayurvedist once who told me I had a very wet system but I can go an entire day without drinking a thing and be fine, so I'm not sure if I should try to drink when I really don't want to or if it'd make things worse...

I have difficulty. When I drink too much I start getting deliourus and dizzy and my eyes get really dry and my eye lids twitch. I'll also get strange headaches. Not normal ones, they feel different. I can't usually go over the 64 oz without getting those symptoms. I wasn't aware that there was such a thing as a "wet system." I'll look into that for myself.
But yeah, your not alone.

I don't get symptoms like that. According to my ayurvedist, I'm a blend of kapha-pitta (the third is Vada). Both of which have water as their element so she told me I had a wet system that didn't require a lot of water but at the same time I tend to retain a lot of water. Her treatment was a course of herbs (12 a day). It helped but it wasn't a long term solution so I'm not quite sure how not to retain a lot of water if I can't drink lots...still working on that. This is a decent questionnaire to figure out what type you are if you wanted to do some research: http://www.niam.com/corp-web/questionnaire.html

If you don't drink a lot of water then you might be retaining BECAUSE you're not drinking enough. One way to get rid of excess water is to drink water. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it actually makes sense. If your body doesn't get enough water, it will hold on to what you give it - camel-like! Also if you're not getting enough water, the level of salts and other minerals in your body become more concentrated, which means you retain water as well.

When you drink enough (and enough is subjective - it's a different amount for everyone), your body will be more likely to not hang on to every little drop you give it.

I don't tend to go by oz or cups or any hard measurements. I judge if I'm getting enough by the color/smell of my urine. If it's a pale straw-yellow color and relatively odorless, then I'm doing ok. If it's darker and/or has a stronger odor, then I need to drink more.

If you're getting headaches and weird symptoms from drinking a lot of water, it's likely that you're drinking too much and creating an electrolyte imbalance by over-diluting the salts/minerals in your body. Again, what "too much" is, is subjective and will be different for everyone. It's also possible that what you're eating is not providing enough of those minerals, so drinking more water exacerbates the problem.

Every person has a different "balance point" of what works for them. It depends on how much water you get from food sources, how much you drink, how much sodium you consume, etc., etc., etc. And for women especially, it changes over the course of your cycle so what worked last week might not work this week.

Thanks PhotoChick! It does make sense what you're saying, for me at least I meant that I have a lot of trouble drinking water because of my system (according to the ayurvedist) so it seems like a catch-22 for drinking lots=less retention. Thanks for the extra information, sorry if it's TMI but since I'm very rarely not super pale yellow--practically clear--I guess I'm not retaining as much water as I thought I was. Lol no quick weight loss for me ;-) And as far as minerals, it sounds like I should go back to taking a multivitamin, which I need to do anyway, this will just be extra incentive.

There are actually diet suggestions you can find that really help. For example I found out I shouldn't drink orange juice or eat foods with lots of water like any squash--which is a killer since I LOVE pumpkin! So for a couple weeks I cut out all the foods on her list and felt soo much better! It's been a few years but now I can have those foods--the ones I like, there were only 2-3 foods on her list I actually liked, my bodies way of saying don't feed me that!--as long as I'm really careful, otherwise I pay the price the next day. I feel sluggish and my glands get swollen.

I'm a Kapha, strongly. This is such an interesting concept, one of my friends mothers is into natural medicine, and she truly believes in this. I retain water like a water buffalo at that time of the month. It is insane. I go up at least a pants size until two days in where i shrink. I just don't weigh myself at that time, because it's TOO depressing.
