I went to see my nutritionist a couple of weeks ago and I mentioned that alot of my clothes are already to big to wear or getting close to it. She told me that I should get rid of them as soon as I was not able to wear them anymore. Well, that makes me a little nervous. Most of the clothes that are now too big are ones I bought around Christmas time so they are pretty new. I am also a little worried that I will need them again. I am pretty handy with the sewing machine, so some of this stuff can be altered for a while. Of course some things I don't have the skill to alter.
So, should I follow her advice? She says that by keeping the clothes I am basically telling myself it is okay to gain the weight back. I can see her point, but the idea of getting rid of my clothes freaks me out.
What do you guys think I should do?
What do you do with your clothes?
Clothes that can not be altered, get rid of them. Give them to someone you know is also in the process of losing weight and could use the clothes temporarily, sell them in eBay, or donate them to a charity shop.
If they can be altered, then do it! But I say don't waste anytime in getting it done, because otherwise you're just holding onto the big clothes telling yourself it's okay to gain the weight back, in a way.
If they can't be altered, see if maybe there's a friend or family member that might want them. If not, donate them!
Currently, all of my too big clothes are being stashed in the spare bedroom. I'm waiting until my friend comes to visit in May, so she can take anything she wants and then I'm donating the rest. Honestly I'm tired of them taking up space in my apartment! Darn me for being a nice friend... hahah.
The only thing I got altered was a $130 dress suit that I'll need when I want to look professional. The rest went to the goodwill pretty quick. Do I look like I want to be a size 18/20 again? Do I look like I want to go through the "joys" of plus size shopping ever again?
Toss them, burn them, run them over, give them away. Alter the best stuff. You don't need "just in case" clothes, you're going to succeed this time.
I'd say alter those that you can, get rid of the rest. Maybe if I'd done that I wouldn't have let myself slide back into the slightly higher sizes. I couldn't afford to get rid of everything, so having a family friend alter them was the best option.
Get rid of or alter them fast! I have a whole slew of dresses I can't wait to fit in again. Today I showed hubby the dress I wore on our first date. I will fit it for our 10 yr wedding anniversary! But even then when that dress is to big he can take a kodak moment and that dress will be gone to! Despite the good memories!
You need to have some faith in your success... and by getting rid/donating clothes it's a sign that you're really ready to get this done. I understand being nervous... but whatever clothes you can sell you can use to buy new things. Also you can get cheap "inbetween" clothes at a thrift store when you need them.
Ditch them as you ditch the weight. I'm in the process of doing that now. I do have one gorgeous jacket that I am contemplating altering but it will be a huge job so it may be outta here soon. I find that altered clothes take me back to my larger self although my head knows I'm smaller.
I say alter if possible. I know it really sucks to have nice clothes you cant wear. I also know its a wonderful feeling knowing they are to big for you. I give alot of clothes to my sisterinlaw who is bigger in the top than i am. I wear bigger bottoms than her. A friend of mine holds on to her old clothes for one full year and then gets rid of them. She says it feels so good to keep them then when its that season try on a few things and then get rid of them all.
I didn't quit wearing most of my clothes until they were really big on me, simply because of the expense of replacing things. Every few months, I would go through my closet and get rid of things that were just too big to keep any longer. I kept one pair of pants and one shirt, as a reminder, and for my "I can fit in one leg of my old pants" photo. I altered a few things as I went along, to save money. Simple things really, like darts in waistbands or in shirts.
I don't want a safety net, in case I start gaining back the weight. If I start gaining weight back, I want it to be as difficult as possible to let it continue. I consider getting rid of clothes part of my insurance that I can't gain the weight back (otherwise I'll have NOTHING to wear).
