Default Fixated On The Number?

Alright, I noticed something today. I'm not sure if this is just me, but I just had to share it with y'all.

I went to Kohl's today to buy some sandals for my honeymoon trip to Vegas this June. I don't own many comfortable sandals (and I think I'll need them in JUNE in NEVADA!), and this is the time to buy shoes (Easter shoe sales up the butt!!). So I found these really cute sandals, found my size, and tried it on. It's the kind of sandal that has a strap that goes around the ankle, keep in mind. And it barely even went on my foot, let alone fit!! I was a bit dumbfounded, but went back and got the next size up that they had. Tried them on... and lo and behold, they fit. I'm usually a 7.5 or 8, and these were a size 9. The weird thing? This didn't bother me at all. Not even in the slightest. I shrugged it off as "must be this brand" or "must be made weird". And I bought the 9's. And they're comfortable. And they're fabulous.

Now why...I ask you, is it that when this happens with PANTS, I freak!?!? If I try on my size 2s in a certain cut or brand and they're too tight...I actually do NOT buy the pants?!!? I think "there must be something wrong with me" instead of "these pants must be cut different". Why is that? Instead of going to the size 4s and buying them...I just get depressed, think of myself as "getting fat" and leave the store disappointed. Am I the only one who does this? I know some brands are cut different, different styles and rises fit different. I KNOW that, but it still bothers me.

I suppose I just never realized how silly it was until today. I KNOW I'm a size 7.5 to 8. Every shoe I've ever, ever bought was that. It clearly is nothing wrong with me, it's just the brand or particular shoe. But why does it bother me with pants (and tops sometimes)?

Am I the only one?

Talking I have the same thing happen

My problem is the scale, the number matters more than the size to me. Also I still see myself as 45 lbs heavier. Isnt that weird? I am glad to know that I am not alone!! I have the last 15 to go....

BTW-Is there a way to report people if they are giving out false info?

Because we feel like we have control over our waistband and that if we don't meet expectations of being whatever size we're supposed to be that we need to lose more weight...because we can control that. We can't control what size our foot is most of the time.

I do agree with you, it is silly how down we get on ourselves!

This is definitely something to try to get over. Clothing sizes mean nothing, nothing at all! A 2 or a 4? You've got to be kidding me! And here I was all happy because I fit into a 12!

Really, you are missing out on wearing some very cute clothes!

writergirl, in the lower left corner of each post there is an icon like an exclamation point. Click it and you can report the post to the admins, who will look into it. This is the best way to deal with it.

Guys don't have to do that, because a 34/32 is a 34/32 no matter whose brand is on it!

I just talked to my fiancee about this. He said that while the sizes are, yes, the same, the fit really depends on the brand. What he did is to go looking for a brand that fits the right way, and then sticks with that brand & buys the appropriate size in that brand.

Somewhat the same that I have to do.

Maybe because I have come down from a size 20/22, but it really doesn't bother me what size clothes are. I am doing a lot of 2nd hand shopping since I am not at goal yet. "Vintage" clothing - compared to new clothing - is sized very differently. I have size 8 - 16 in my closet right now. I even have 1 size 16 blouse that is too small - it is sized the same as a size 6 blouse that I also have.

After wearing elastic waistbands and sacks with sleeves for so long, I care a lot more about how a garmet fits and looks on me than the size on the tag.

You are not alone though. I have found that many 2nd hand garments have the size tag cut off/out. Bugs the heck out of me!
