Default Those Darned Bubbles

If you're computer savvy, can you tell me how to get rid of an unwanted reminder? My daughter's friend stayed with us this summer and installed Skype. Now that she's moved on, I've uninstalled it but get a bubble in Portuguese and English to download Skype. How do I get rid of it?

My daughter will tell you that when it comes to computers, I'm pretty pathetic. She had to help me start a Favorite list on YouTube.

Make a copy of c:\windows\regedit.exe and name it regedit2.exe. Then try searching the registry for any entry with "skype" in it. Delete every entry that has "skype" and reboot.

Should you mess up the registry however and not be able to access windows, at the C: prompt on bootup, type copy c:\windows\regedit2.exe regedit.exe and you will replace the one you messed up with the backup copy you made and be able to bootup again.

Never mess with your registry without this backup copy!

I'd go to Control Panel - then Add/Remove Programs = I wouldn't mess with the other.

But she already uninstalled it. Some programs leave stuff in your registry and won't uninstall completely.

Do a search on "Free Windows Registry Repair"... download it and run the process. It will get rid of the cruddy leftovers from deleted programs.

Thanks to tamaralynn and almost heaven for the advice. This is the first chance I got to revisit this subject. I tried both suggestions. With the regedit, I wish I could remember what I ran into, but it involved a message saying that I could go no farther. With the free registry cleaning, I got my registry analyzed, and then they wanted money to repair. Being the tightwad that I am and not really sure what exactly they'd be cleaning up (would they let me know?), I stopped there for now. I'm thinking about trying regedit again. All didn't end badly, though; I cleaned up my hard disk and did a defrag. I also looked online for help. Frequently I saw go to Tools>Organize my Extras>Extras then pick TalkAndWrite and uninstall. Since the Tools on the Explorer toolbar did not have Organize My Extras, I'm assuming it's on a toolbar that comes with the Skype program? And do I need to reevaluate how important it is to get rid of this damned bubble?

If that's the case, you could always try reinstalling Skype and then doing the Tools/Organize my Extras deal.
