Default Did anyone have their "membranes stripped" when overdue?

The midwife tried this today with my daughter who is 3-4 cm dialated and overdue. Has anyone had it done--did it work to speed up the waiting for labor to start???

Asked my friend the midwife for you. She says that it works about half the time. So...50% chance things will speed up!

Hopefully she will be in the 50% that it works for!! She is so miserable. She had terrible morning sickness for the first 5 months and know she can't is starting to get sick again. She has gained 0 pounds the last two visits.

I agree with the 50% or so working, but 3-4 cm is a VERY nice start, so I would say it has a pretty good chance of working. Is it her first baby? If she has birthed vag before, it has a great chance of working.

Sex helps too.

How exciting!!!

My midwife did it for me when I was just a few days passed my EDD. I was closed and she streatched to 4 cm. It took 3 days before I went into labour. The midwife said it usually happens within 3 days.

Well, my daughter is in the 50% that it didn't work on. She's still waiting, but now that she has the date to be induced she is amazingly calm. She says she knows that it will be over by then and is ok with that. I guess she didn't get her little 07 tax deduction!!

How over due is she?

Like is she past 42 weeks? Overdue does not take place till 43wks.

Technically, she should be just fine by any doctors'/hospitals' standards up until 42 weeks 6 days. She can have frequent nonstress tests until then.

Oh... I forgot to add, if she's not yet 42 weeks, she's really doing great as far as progression goes. Especially if it's her first pregnancy. (average first pregnancy is over 41wks.)

In addition to sex (the unprotected sort, there are hormones found in semen that help ripen the cervix) some nice long ankle and foot massages are in order. Nipple stimulation helps, too.

I had appointments set to induce both of my kids (both 2 weeks overdue) and I ALWAYS went into labor a day before the appointment hehehe

I hope things go well for her - tell her Congrats!

Congrats on your soon to be grandbaby!!! I hope her induction (or before!) goes well.

For me it was painful as heck...my cervix wasn't ripe at all in spite of lots of EPO, sex, walking... the stripping caused my membranes to rupture...but not even that put me into active labor...I didn't even have 1 contraction after my waters broke! So after 12 hours I agreed to pit and after another 24 hours dd#1 was born! I cannot believe that I agreed to let my midwife perform it with dd#2 as well. You get to that overdue-uncomfortable stage though and the voices in your head tell you to do anything!!! It *maybe* helped the dilation along, but I still needed pit.

I had it done before my due date (I was 4 cm dilated though) and it didn't work for me. I noticed some minor contractions that night, but they subsided. It did loosen my plug though. I was reading up on it and basically they said it works when the baby's ready, it doesn't when the baby's not.

Sounds like you're just all about pampering the Soon-to-be Mom!!! Get the husband working before Mom's gotta be doing all the work when the baby's born! lol

I would LOVE some of that extra attention when I'm pregnant! lol
