anybody here take protein whey after working out to help build muscle?
i just started working out. i heard that if you take protein whey right after you work out it helps build muscle. anybody think protein whey is helpful or just a waste of money? just wondering. thanks.
Protein is a very good thing and if you want to build lots of muscle, you should have plenty of it. That said, there are plenty of other ways to get protein into your diet without the powder: you could make an egg white omelet after your workout or eat some chicken and it would have the same effect.
Read the thread below on Post Workout Nutrition - I think it will tell you everthing you want to know, as it puts all the info in one place. I had been hearing that for years, too. It's not mandatory, but I think if you got really serious and wanted to work it 100%, it would be a part of that serious plan.
Honestly, I do not know about what time you should have whey protien. But I know it is great for you, you can make a shake with fruits in it too!!!! SOOO YUMMY. From what I understand, that is the best protien, as far as, it does not contain animal products, but you are still getting a nice heap of protien, which we could all use. It is a very healthy way to get a nice portion of protien in your diet, with out consuming a lot of meats.
Whey does not contain animal products? It is what is left over after milk is curdled and strained. It is not a meat protein, but I would consider it an animal product. Also, if you define "best" proteins as being complete proteins (containing all of the essential amino acids), then the best proteins would be animal products. That is not to say other proteins cannot be used, it just that they need to be combined in order to ensure that all of the EAA's get into the diet.
The best thing about Whey protein is that it is a fast digesting protein. This makes it a very good choice for post-workout.
That being said, as Fran said, this is if you are looking to be 100% optimal. You can definitely build muscle without it, especially if you are not already in the advanced training category. If you enjoy a whey shake and can fit it in within your overall nutrtion plan, then by all means, use them. If you don't really care for them or find them less satisfying than a real food meal, then you are likely not losing anything by passing them up.
Worrying about fast-digesting proteins and optimal carbs to protein ratio post-workout is the final 2-3%. Your overall nutrition is probably 65-75% of any fitness program. Consistent and sound training is probably the next 30%. That leaves 5% for "optimal nutrition techniques" and advanced training strategies such as the utilization of shock techniques etc.
People who have body compositions like Kaw or whose relative strength numbers put them in the advanced level like Mel, can worry about that last 5%. Most of us, need to really spend our time concentrating on the 95%. Worrying about that final 5% is probably only going to confuse and frustrate.
To paraphrase Alwyn Cosgrove: "Advanced" does not mean "better results."
Advanced techniques whether they be training or nutritional are what advanced people (very low bf%, advanced strength levels, elite athletes, etc) need to do to turn to in order to continue to make progressions. Those less advanced can continue to make steady and consistent progressions without them.
Whey protein is more efficent, in the sense that meat has saturated fats and cholosterol. I would suggest that it can help you meet your protein intake. I have always heard it was good to eat a bananna after working out. Good Luck.
Yes, I slug down a whey shake after a heavy workout. But I also just eat a well balanced, CLEAN meal of protein, carbs and loads of vegies after most workouts. They key for muscle building is proper nutrition and timing. Make sure you eat in that golden window within 45 minutes post workout and get proteins and carbs.
If you are trying to lose weight as well as build muscle, there is nothing magic about whey protein that will accelerate weight loss. The calories still count!
