Alright everyone! WAKE UPPPPPP!!!!!!

Where is everyone and why are you not posting any more??? YOU know who you are! We're all back from summer vacations, Labor Day breaks, back-to-school, whatever it was that was keeping you from posting here like you USED to! IF it's bc you haven't been working out as much.....well....post here anyway and re-find your motivation!

OK, so yesterday was dh's bday and I pushed off the legitimate need to go buy him a bday cake at Baskin Robbins! He didn't even get any cake or ice cream all day! We went to a bbq last nite with some of our swimteam parents & kids and by the time we got home about 8:30, everyone was just ready for bed. The early darkness and chilly weather now helps with that. Kids were asleep by 9 and up by 7 this morning. Off to another soccer game this weekend at noon, and then I'll come back and do my cardio and fbwo.

Happy Sunday everyone, and remember, POST & let us know how you're doing. (PS, my drama isn't over yet, but I'm not letting it grip me in fear any more!)

Hi Fran, thanks for starting the thread.

I just finished a marathon session of cooking protein pancakes. I do it every Sunday morning, then freeze them and pull one out each morning. Takes a long time, but on week day mornings it sure is worth it! Otherwise who knows what I'd be eating! Next on the schedule is a trip to Sam's Club to stock up on chicken breasts and then pre-cook enough for the week's lunches for me a ds.
I'm getting tired of food....

Yesterday we did a neighborhood scavenger hunt, then dinner party. I've never seen so many variations of pasta dishes in my life. Luckily, I brought hummus with baby carrots and shrimp, someone else brought a delicious salad with strawberries. Except for the vino, I successfully negotiated the evening!

Off on a food expedition....

But but but... I'm so tired and whiny, I can't even stand myself. For the past month, I've been a complete slug. Bleh. I'm still here, though, as I get time (been *really* busy) and doing my workouts only about half of the time. Lucky for me, today is my normal rest day so I can be a slug guilt-free... until tomorrow.

Happy weekend, everyone!

All Right! I'm here.

Just really busy Fran. But I swear, I'm still making it to the gym at least four days a week. I'm still working on the balance thing. Kids are in their routines but I really feel like I'm chasing my own tail right now. So much to do...but, I keep in mind what my friend tells me, "There's a time for growing grass and a time for growing children..." Some times I get in a hurry and I almost mow the children into the grass. Just kidding...but it is a good thing it's a big yard.

I had a really cool NSV this weekend. My cousin, who is (ahem) twenty years younger than me is just starting her first year at OSU. I'm so excited for her...anyway, she has gained a little weight over the last two years and is really troubled by it. Over the weekend she asked my mother if I could help her out. OMG. My first victim! I can't wait! I have to smile about this because it was her mother who put together my first lifting plan when I was in college and gave me the grand tour of Larkins Hall way back in the day. Even with her support it was all so overwhelming and looking back, she didn't even go near the free weights, it was all machines. But it was such a big deal to me that she took the time from her busy schedule to do this for me. Now it's my turn. : If that girl follows my lead she is going to rule the world when she is done there! Okay, I'm not like excited about this or anything.

Okay, who's next! and what got you fired up this weekend?

Good mooooorning, everyone!! Don't you just love the COOL weather that is settling in for those of us in the east? It's a great way to get re-energized about exercising, at least for me! Looking back, I find that I always have the most success with my fitness plans during this time of the year.

Great for you Lydia! I think sharing your knowledge with someone else will feel so great! Will you get to stay in touch regularly with your cousin, or will she be tucked away on campus somewhere once her studies get going? It would be great if you guys could meet up like every couple of weeks or something for a workout!

OK, so waterat, shananigans, nelie, bflcat, depalma, kaplods, what's up???

I'm here, I'm here! And, coincidentally, I just got back from the gym. Today was leg/ab day, and I'm pleased to report a new personal record on narrow-stance front squats (which I prefer because of a chronic hip problem that's exacerbated by back squats). Yay, me!

I can already tell that I'll pay for it later today and tomorrow. My legs are toast. With jelly. Lots and lots of jelly.

Mmmm, jelly. Did I mention that I haven't had breakfast yet?

Speaking of food: Mel, is the recipe for your protein pancakes on line anywhere? I could use a quick, easy, and portable breakfast food.

Ta ta.

Hi LWL,

Hi hrbabe..I'm here, I'm here. And typing this with shaking fingers and wobbly legs. The weather forecast SAID rain in the afternoon... and I was drizzled thoroughly when i got hoime from work, on my bike, which was why the legs are toast.
Seriously, I am NOT in favour of this cold and dark thing that is creeping up on me. It is dark when my alarm goes, and it is cold enough to think of mittens and scarves. BUT I did the bike thing today, and I 'll be going to power class in the evening.

I'm currently trying to figure out the food thing again with the help of Peeke's books, but I am starved when i get home and today I was actually wobbly and weak from hunger!.

Mel- can I second the question about the protein pancakes ? And do you eat this with anything?

Have a great day all,
Rabbit

And I'm here on this Monday morning. It's lovely clear and sunny here - after it got light of course! I'm with you Rabbit - so not ready for the darkness. And we had a our first frost this morning! And there is fresh snow on the mountains (what we call termination dust )

Lydia, I hear on chasing your tail. Between us DH and I are out every night this week - at least it's together on Fri. And I'm leaving Friday night/Sat morning (okay 1:55 am on Sat, but I need to go to the airport Fri night) for a "girls' week" in Washington. I'm so ready for that, but when will I find the time to do laundry and pack....... I'm thinking that sleep is grossly overrated (not!!)

There are many variations of the protein pancake running around 3FC. I'm not sure which Mel uses, but I got mine from Ilene.

1/3 cup each:
egg whites (3) or egg substitute
oatmeal
cottage cheese

Blend well (I use a stick blender) and cook. This makes one good sized fairly thick pancake. I like to thin it down with water and make 3-4 thin pancakes. I top mine with fruit and sometimes ff plain yogurt.

Fran - yes Mam! Elisa checking in too!! Thanks for the I was thinking the same thing as you..where has everyone been, yet I've been just as bad.

Kaw - I think that pancake recipe is fairly standard. Just remember equal parts egg whites, cottage cheese and oats and you're good to go. You learn to adjust slightly for preference on how thick you want the pancakes. I find the batter gets better (thicker) if I let it sit for a few minutes. Now I know to usually mix up the batter in the blender and then get the pan ready. A tiny bit of Pam on a non-stick pan and you're good to go. Oh, and I add a tiny bit of sweetener and vanilla and then they're delicious plain. I love love love them!! What I did learn though, Mel, is that you can make a batch and freeze them! Who knew?

Lydia - love that NSV! Don't you find that you just want to "convert" everyone who's interested in being healthy or losing weight. I have to control myself so I don't turn into one of "those people" who won't shut up about it. And I, too, am struggling for balance.

It continues to be a huge struggle for me food-wise lately. I've had lots of big eating days in the past few weeks but I've been smart enough to stay off the scale for a few days and each time I've managed to get back to where I was (phew!) Maybe this time I got on the scale too soon because I was up 4 lbs.! Yeesh!! Not pretty and I was soooo hungry again today. I'm keeping up with the exercise though so I'm hoping things will settle down.

I'm running my first official 5k at the end of the month and my last couple runs have not been great. I know (I hope) I'll finish and I would think my time will be okay but it now seems highly unlikely that I'll make my goal of breaking 30 minutes. Oh well. I decided that after the race, I'm taking the cardio down a notch and kicking up the strength training to see what happens.

Hi to everyone....I've rambled so long that I now don't have time to say hello to everybody. See what happens when you make me check in!

My standard recipe:

4 egg whites
1/4-1/3 c. oatmeal
1/2 c. pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons ground flax seed
1/4 c. cottage cheese
1 tsp psyllium husks
vanilla, cinnamon, a little water

Blend it all, and cook about 6-7 minutes per side. The pumpkin makes it "thicker" and takes more time to cook, but adds volume, vitamins and fiber. I started adding it when I completely cut out wheat (I used to add 1/4 c. fiber one, or more oatmeal. Gluten-free oatmeal is REALLY expensive!)They freeze and nuke really well.

I eat then with some diced apple or other fruit, and a blob of yogurt (maybe 1 tablespoon) and sometimes SF pancake syrup.

Thanks for the recipes, gals! I'll have to try these. I'm getting a bit tired of my standard breakfast -- cottage cheese with a bit of the fruit of the day -- and it'd be nice to have something that's more portable.

Lifting went well this morning. You know how some days you just feel stronger than others, even though there's been no identifiable change in your routine? Well, today was one of the strong days. Feeling strong makes me happy.

Off to my first meeting of the day. Toodles!

Hi LWL,

Pat, mel, thanks for the redipe! I'm going to try that, i need something to take to work for my afternoon snack.
My co -workers go to lunch in the canteen at 12, and it is common practice to eat it together, But it is difficult to fit it in:
i breakfast at 7, then MM snack at around 10, lunch at 12, and I go home at around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. When i come home i am starving and eat everything in sight. And then i have no appetite for dinner, which usually is at 5.30. I think i definitely need to eat something before I bike home, because when i copme in at 3.30 or 4, I eat everything in sight.

Went to powerclass yesteray, but my legs were jello and I could really feel I had also lifted on sunday. Today I took the day off excercise wise. Tomorrow I'm biking to work again. I am up 2 pounds since last week, but I hope this is water retention and TOM.

Have a great day all,
Rabbit

Evening all. Well, today was a complete reversal of yesterday, weatherwise. It's cool and raining, and the wind is supposed to pick up (to 75 mph!) tonight. Let's hope they're wrong.

I have a new incentive to take my exercise program to another level. DH has found an Elderhostel trip to the Grand Canyon in late Feb/early March that involves staying in a nice lodge down in the canyon (yay!) and doing day hikes of 6-7 miles. Not that you can't opt out of a day, but it's a good incentive for me to be in tiptop cardio shape. Plus there's a chance that some friends from Colorado may be able to join us there. My plan now is to get to the gym before work at least 3 mornings a week. I would rather shower, eat and get ready for work at home, but it's still doable if I push my start time back to 8:30 and take only 1/2 hour for lunch. This should work fine until it gets really cold and my car needs to be plugged in for a few hours before running. I think I can get a timer that will help with that, though. I did get up this morning and do a LBWO at 6, and while it wasn't pleasant, I felt good about being done with it!

Rabbit - you definitely need something a little while before you bike home. I'm very familiar - sigh - with that "eat everything in sight" when you come home hungry. Phooey on those 2 pounds, they'll be gone as quickly as they came!

Pat, the Elderhostel trip sounds like a great idea. My Parents have been on quite a few of their trips and always rave about them.

I got up super early when my dh left to play ice hockey and did a treadmill run. Wohoo! 5 miles in 55 minutes with a steep incline for most of it. My knees didn't hurt until I walked for a 2 minute cool down. Weird.

Today I'll do my most boring gym day- shoulders, then a few rounds of the track with lunges and side squats. The little old ladies who walk at lunch time think it's hilarious to lap me while I'm doing that. They guys nearly run me over

Have a good day

Pat: My parents have also done (and led) some of the Elderhostel trips, and like them. I'd be more inclined to go somewhere other than the Grand Canyon, though. We went last spring, supposedly before the "rush", and the bright angel trail was like a freeway (certainly by Alaskan standards). Even some of the lesser known trails were overrun with hikers, many of whom had no business being down there: not carrying enough water, wearing dress shoes, etc. And you might as well go to Disneyland as the South Rim, for all the pavement and tourists. (We also went to Toroweap/Tuweep on the north side. Much more to our tastes, perhaps because it involved a long, bumpy drive over gravel and boulders. Just like "home.")

My morning workout was cut short by a meeting for which I had to dress up. In adult clothes. With heels. I don't understand what's wrong with these people, scheduling meetings that cut into my exercise time. Feh.
