Ever since I read Nessa's post about going to the Outback I can not stop thinking about their Baked Potatoes!!!! Or their bread for that matter!

I am ever going to get to eat a potato again??? I would even just eat the red ones

sweet potatoes are fine...

after you are well into p2 experiment and see what happens if you eat a new potato.. the old ones are high on the GI index but a new potato or the smaller ones, might work for you....

Wink Oh I know what you mean....

I really don't crave the sweets as much as I crave breads. I work in retail and I was marking some fresh loaves of Bread. Oh My Gosh, but I wanted that bread.

It looks as if you are doing a great job. Keep it up. I know that If it is going to last for a lifetime though, you will have to let yourself have those tabu items. We just need to learn moderation. I have lost my weight only to regain it. I know that I have to make this a lifestyle.

I am sure you have thought of this...but I have seen some people using jimica and slicing it like french fries and baking, someone said they dont have much flavor but are very 'potato-ish' or what about mashed cauliflower? Use lots of roasted garlic and maybe you wont be able to tell the difference!

Just a thought!

all such great ideas!
Missmess.. I never thought I could "live" without baked potatoes..but , I hardly miss them! Expecially when I go to the Steakhouses like Outback or Longhorns.. I ask for steamed veggies - no butter-- and they are delish in my book! And the Breads that are presented there: I tell em ahead of time... dont bring the bread basket.. I cant be trusted...and again, you know what, I dont feel like I'm deprived .. if I'm hungry hungry, I'll order the skewered shrimp sans butter but extra seasoning instead.. a big YUM~

ImInHere, rutabagas are awesome! My uncle always serves them with the Easter ham and I should really try to make them myself. Not only would I get them more than once a year that way, but I would continue to expand my food repertoire beyond "all things meaty".

Somewhere I read a thread about fried radishes too. Supposedly, they tasted like home fries if you cooked them right.

I haven't done the mashed cauliflower thing yet, but I'm sure I will eventually as it seems to be a staple on my 5-vegetable rotation (cauli, broc, green beans, cabbage, onions). If I could find a good source for fresh brussels sprouts, Id eat them too.

Missmess, sweet potatoes mashed with Smart Balance, splenda and pumpkie pie spice are killer! They taste like sweet potato pie.

But I agree with you, if this is a lifestyle change, we really need to learn to make peace with potatoes so we can have them occasionally without going nutso.

I can't stands the brussels sprouts!!!!

my new thing is KALE...I love esp. in stirfry...I make szechuan style stirfry...spicy and yummy...mostly all veggies....kale, broccoli, bean sprouts, zucchini, etc....

turnips and rutabagas are easy to make...just boil like potatoes, but longer....then mash with some olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, and lite sour cream or yogurt....YUM!!

I use cauliflower to make "rice"....I put the florets thru the shredder of my food processor...then place in a covered bowl (dry) and nuke for 60 to 75 seconds...then fluff and use for white "rice"...it's great for chicken "rice " soup...or for stir frys....or add it to cooked brown rice to lower carbs and calories....

Oh, kale. I love kale!!!

I am going to try some pumpkin pie spices in my sweet potatoes next time I make them! Thanks for the idea, Liannie.

Laura, my son has a conniption about brussel sprouts. We keep telling him that when we move to Germany (we'll not be far from Belgium) that we'll only be able to get brussel sprouts. He doesn't think that's very funny!

Turnips...mmmmmmm...I have a thing for turnips and I haven't had any in awhile.

You gals have my veggie cravings going wild!

Here is a recipe for potato substitute. It's from 2002 but was pretty good if I remember correctly. Somewhere I have one for shredded radishes cooked in a frying pan. I'll try to find it.

Try roasting your brussel sprouts with a little drizzle of olive oil, yum! Even sworn brussel sprout haters like them this way.

Kale is a veggie I just can't seem to like. I've tried to force myself to like it, but, nope. I sub escarole or spinach for it in recipes. Another is okra, I just can't develope a liking for that, either.

Another great recipe that tastes just like potatoes is the one for "Potato" Salad. You make potato salad just like you normally would, except that you substitute cooked cauliflower for the potatoes. Delicious!

Oooo, Nessa. That sounds great! I just asked you in a different thread how you cook brussel sprouts, so I will go edit my post since you answered my question here.

They will be on the menu for next week sometime!
