Default Volumetrics -- the Long, Hot Summer

Welcome . . . . . . Thought we should have a new start for a new (almost) season . . . Hope this will become one of your favourite places at 3FC . . .

VOLUMETRICS is not new, it just hasn't been making as big a splash in the weight loss community as some of the better known plans. A recent article in Newsweek has been bringing a little more attention. If you haven't yet seen the article, here is a link . . . http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17537369/ . . . I first discovered Volumetrics about a year ago thanks to this review on 3FC . . . http://www.3fatchicks.com/Diets/Diet...s_Eating_Plan/ . . . After reading this review I went and bought both of the books and decided the Principles of Volumetrics was something I could live with . . . forever.

VOLUMETRICS explains how to FEEL FULL ON FEWER CALORIES . . . and let's face it, most of us don't stick with something very long, if we feel totally deprived all the time. The guiding principle is to get the 'highest volume of food at the lowest cost in calories' by choosing foods with a lower ED (Energy Density). BTW, 3FC has a data-base of over 7000 foods . . . http://www.3fatchicks.com/food-calorie-counts/ . . . and is one of the few that includes the ED for all the items.

What foods have a lower ED? Basically, those that contain the highest water and fibre contents . . . for example; we all know that grapes and raisins start out as the same fruit, right? Raisins simply have had the water content removed. Did you know that 1/4 cup of raisins contains about 100 calories? More importantly . . . did you know that you can eat almost 2 full cups of grapes for the same 100 calories! I know which would make me feel fuller and stay fuller for longer . . . how about you?

Anyway, enough of my blathering for now . . . Please come and join our little discussion group as we help each other make our way along the long and winding road to better health and fitness the VOLUMETRICS way . . . hope to see you all soon . . .

I eat for bulk, fiber, freshness and nutrition, so, guess what? I have been following this plan without knowing it (and yes, I am actually a "vegetable munching vegan" as that article linked puts it ).

I am going to look into getting the book at the library.

Hi everyone,
I'm doing the Beck Diet Solution, and I chose Volumetrics as my diet. I haven't done it before, but I think it is perfect for me. I won't actually start the diet until Thursday, though.

I'd love to join your group and hear all of your suggestions!
Best of luck to all of you!

Hi Chickies . . . . . . Welcome aboard the volumetrics thread. It's usually pretty quiet around here. This is simply not one of the more popular "plans".

Too simple and too basic, maybe? . . . I know I tend to think of it more as a "principle" to live by rather than a "plan" to be followed. The principle does work though, and I think a lot of people are following it whether they think so or not. Volumetrics fits in beautifully with a lot of the more popular plans out there -- like Weight Watchers and South Beach and even Atkins.

Anyway . . . keep things moving and shaking, gang . . . If we all just keep doing the best we can, the rewards will follow . . . See you soon . . .

I really love fruits and vegetables but I have a hard time staying full if I don't eat some fat along with it. What kinds of stuff could you eat for breakfast? If I start the day hungry, I usually mess up pretty quick.

I am also doing the Beck Diet Solution and I'm reconsidering the diet I had chosen (and I start Wednesday). Breakfast ideas?

Thanks,
Lianne

Liannie,
I was flipping through the Volumetrics book last night, and I noticed they had some breakfast items with eggs (like frittatas) that would use maybe one egg yolk and 2 ore more egg whites. I personally really like southwestern eggbeaters, since it's kind of like a pre-made omelet and very quick. Eggs work best for me as far as being full is concerned.

I'll look through the recipes tonight and see what else they have. I remember a whole-wheat pancake recipe with a berry sauce, but I can't remember anything else.

Good Morning . . .

I slept in again . . . didn't get up until 9:00 am . . . good grief. Fed the menagerie, fed myself. Now just have time for a quick HI around some 3FC places before I get in the shower to get ready for my opthamologist appointment.

Most high fibre cereal with berries and skim milk are acceptable for breakfast, too. If you look up cereals in the book, you find they are fairly high ED, but the skim milk brings them down to an okay level. The fibre in the berries makes them a good choice. Any egg white and veggie combination is a good choice. Just avoid the yolks (that's where the fat hangs out) and stay away from adding meats and cheeses.

Have a great day doing all sorts of moving and shaking things, gang . . . see you later . . .

Just wanted to drop in and say Hi! I love Volumetrics and think it's a great way of approaching weight loss. I love how the author, Barbara Rolls, has really done experiments to verify the advice in the book. Excellent! I agree with the person upthread who said that it was more of a principle than a diet plan. I think that's why there aren't as many people who are following it - it's too simple! There's no rigorous strict diet plan or forbidden foods ... just an advice to eat foods that are less energy dense! But it's really changed my way of looking at food - for the better.

Hi Chickies . . .

Just a quick HI this morning . . . found this waiting in my e:mail and couldn't resist sharing it with you . . .

http://www.everydayhealth.com/photog...shame.aspx?p=1

. . . what I liked best about it was the healthier alternative recipes they provided. I haven't tried to figure out any of the EDs, but got to be a big, big bunch better than the original would be . . .

Hope you all have a great day . . . See you soon . . .

Howdy there! I have been following the Volumetrics eating plan for almost 3 weeks and have lost 9 pounds! I am loving it. I think it is healthy, easy and just makes sense. Having done Atkins(which worked but I felt so cheated.lol) volumetrics just "fits" me, whereas Atkins didn't. I have not felt deprived at all and feel good that I am really adding healthy foods into my diet..veggies, fruits, salads, nonfat milk etc..

Love it.

Of course Volumetrics isn't popular.

It doesn't guarantee "quick" weight loss, it is too sensible with solid science behind it, and there's nothing exotic about it; no phases, glycemic iindex theories, etc. It's just plain boringly workable.

I really like this plan. After a while you find your own equilibrium. I mean I don't count calories, carbs, etc. All I do is figure out the Ed of a recipe as best I can without getting neurotic about it. What I mean by finding my own equilibrium is that I'm learning just how overboard I can/can't go with foods that have an ED over 2. And let me tell you...I can't go overboard very much!

I really enjoy eating this way and will continue to do so. I do not forbid myself anything I want, but I now know I just can't eat a lot of foods that have a high caloric density. For me it's as simple as that.

Good Morning . . .

Nice day shaping up here in Atlantic Canada . . . not overly warm, but the sun is shining. . .

Had a wonderful dinner of fresh lobster and asparagus last night . . . absolutely yummy . . . although I did have to keep beating the cats away from my plate.

Well within acceptable ED levels too . . . but, once again, I did manage to eat too many total calories, even though the ED was good. Once you get to that "OMG I think I'll explode if I have one more bite" stage, it really doesn't matter about the ED anymore -- too much of a good thing is still too much. (especially for a diabetic)

Anyway, gang . . . must run . . . many things to do and places to go. First up, have to get my cracked windshield replaced so my car can pass it's annual safety inspection. Have a great moving and shaking kind of day, Chickies . . . see you all again soon . . .

Just another quick

Took over three hours to get that stupid windshield installed so I never did get all my errands run yesterday afternoon so will pick up where I left off today.

At least my eating was much better controlled yesterday. So this week is now back on track. . .

Hope everybody has a great moving and shaking kind of day doing nothing but good stuff . . . see you all later . . .
