Basically, there are so many different plans because there are so many different people. Most of the plans work if you stick with them, but the issue is-WILL YOU stick with them?
I can't go without carbs-fruit, veggies, whole grains...so I would be insane on Atkins, for instance.

There is no way I could make low carbing a lifestyle...but others do fine on it.
You have to check around, and see how each plan is made up-and decide whether you can make it a permanent lifestyle change, and not a "diet". If you go on a diet...you lose weight, but if you go "off" it, you gain weight back. The key to life long weight loss and maintainance is finding what you can do forever.
