How did you pick your goal weight?

  • When I read peoples' posts, I usually look at their height and goal weight. I've noticed that our goals are very varied even when our heights are not and it has just made me wonder....where did you get the number you picked from?

Personally, I picked 150 because it was a nice round number. The last 'ideal' weight I was at was 140 but that was 17 years and 3 kids ago so I thought it would be unrealistic of me to aim for that again. I may reasses that.
  • i picked 168 mostly because that's what my license says I weigh! haha which is what I truely did weigh when I turned 16 and got it haha!
  • I picked mine because it's a nice, even, 200 lb loss. But once I get close to goal, I think I'll be changing it.
  • Linking some old conversations on this topic to here. It hasn't been used in a while but, may be informative too.

There is another conversation out there too. I will try to find it and link it here.

I decided on my goal weight based on an arbitrary number. I hadn't been below 175 in so very long. I just picked a number that was "overweight" for my height based on a chart for height and bone size. Then decided, when I get there I will pick my end goal. If I was small enough to be happy and had a low enough body weight at that point, I would stop.

It was a pencil mark on paper type of thing. It could always be erased and redone.
  • In my adult life I have been over 200 pounds 95% of the time. Once I got to 185 and was a brief size 12 (literally lasted less than a month). I really wanted a size not a number. I am hoping to land between and 8 and a 10. I am a solid person and even in high school at a size 6 I weighed 145. I hope to get to 175 with this diet and then 165 eventually with exercise and watching what I eat.
  • I chose 130 because for my height, being this weight will put me at a "normal" BMI. I realize that the BMI charts aren't perfect and don't take into consideration a lot of variables, but I think it's still something for me to shoot for. The closer I get to that goal, I'll relook at things (and myself) and decide if that is something that I will be comfortable & happy with.

I have NEVER been 130 in my adult life. When I graduated from high school, I weighed 170ish. I probably haven't seen 130 since I was in 6th or 7th grade... The funny thing is that for me, since high school, I have only gone up 1 pants size even though I've put on 40+ lbs. I will be curious to see what size I wear when I hit my graduation weight!

Size-wise, I'd like to be in a 4 or a 6. Small to medium tops (but that all depends on how my boobs cooperate. :-D)
  • My goal weight was chosen because it was doable and because I know how I look at that weight. It's a weight I can live with and be comfortable with for my height, body composition and age. Once I get there ( and I am getting close!!!) I may well want to lose a few more lbs to get into the 'healthy' bmi.
  • I haven't decided on a # yet but I want to be able to wear a size 10. I want to be a weight that I can live with and is realistic. I haven't put a lot of consideration into wgt/hgt charts...
  • I picked 210 because across multiple diets over the past 15 years, I never could get below that. By co-incidence, it's the upper end of what the BMI calculators say I should be.
