Point discrepancies--what do I believe?

  • I just had a cup of Trader Joe's black bean chili which has 230 calories, 1.5 fat grams, and 10 grams of fiber. According to the online WW eTools calculator that is equal to 4 points; the pocket pointsfinder guide says it's worth 3 points; and according to the WW Food Companion it's worth 2 points (low-fat chili with 5+ grams of fiber). What the heck do I believe?! TIA
  • I'd stick with the points finder results.

  • Do you have an old 1-2-3 Success Pointsfinder? It ought to be 4 points under Winning Points. Only use the book as a last resort, when you don't have the actual NI to put into your pointsfinder or etools.

The mathematical manipulation performed by the pointsfinder (not the patented WW formula, but comes out the same, and this is what the slide rule does) is:
Start with calories (in your case, 230)
Subtract 10 x fiber grams (up to 4 g max--that's where 1-2-3 differs from WP--in your case this would be 40 under WP but 100 under 1-2-3)
Add 4 x fat grams (in your case, this comes out to 6)
Divide total by 50 and round up (here, the WP total is 196, which comes out to 4, and the 1-2-3 total is 136, which comes out to 3)
  • The current Pointsfinder that the fibergoes to 4 or more..will give you the most accurate info.
