Thyroid

  • Well, now that I've beaten my high bp into submission with meds, exercise and lots of water, I've got another issue! Been exercising 1 hour every day, fairly vigorously for 1 month, eating well, staying under 2000 cal per day. Well, I have not lost a lb actually gained three! I have been referred to endocrinologist for hyper thyroid, but believe there is more going on. I'm retaining too much water again, feet puffy and bp is now low normal. What's going on??? I expected a few lbs of weight loss at least for all my efforts. I feel like I have symptoms of hypo, but will have a prob convincing my dr of this considering the recent bloodwork. Have a dr's appt on the 30, and expect a lecture about being overweight despite my efforts because scale has gone up. Help!!
  • Tigger - there are a couple of threads going about hypothyroidism. some of the info in there may really help you. I also posted a thread on the depressoin boards just yesterday called "Depression and Hypothyroidism" and it explains the correct tests that should be run in order to correctly test your thyroid.

You can read it at http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49560

your symptoms sound like low thyroid (hypo) not hyper - what did you see on your recent blood work?

Also there is a great book with good info called "The Thyroid Diet" by Mary J. Shomon that you might like to read.

    take care,

  • But also keep in mind that you can be hyper thyroid like I once was and still gain weight, having a thyroid disorder can cause your whole body to go into a tail spin. For me when I was hyper thyroid I was ALWAYS hungry ravenous eve, and because I was hyper I was very very very tired I slept ALL the time now I was told by my doctor that the symptoms I was having were very rare in a hyperthyroid case. It was because I was producing so much hormone that it was making me crash. They were actually very very suprised that I didn't have a heart attack because of my levels. That was my experience with hyper thyroid, but now I'm Hypo because I had the goiter that was producing my hormones removed so it made me go to the opposite, now I have the same symptoms as before just not nearly as bad as when I was hyper thy.

Just wanted to share my 2 bits
