First off - I am ALMOST officially leasing Dakota!!!
Rode him again in my lesson with Dee Dee on Saturday - we'll be doing the lease paperwork this coming weekend, and the lease will 'officially' begin September 1st. His owner and I get along great! Of course, with the soft market in horses right now, it's VERY tempting just to buy my own horsie at this point...

but I am a cautious person by nature - and my plan has always been:
1) lessons until I am a 'competent' rider (Dee Dee feels I'm a 'low intermediate' at this stage, ability-wise);
2) leasing to get a feel for what it's like to actually own a horse;
3) save my pennies and advance in my career until I can truly afford to buy (and more importantly, keep!) a horse of my own.
I guess I'm being even more cautious since I spend a large amount of time at horse rescue and auction sites (my favorite one is
www.tierrescue.org). A good many of the horses that end up in feedlots, rescues, or low-end auctions are purebred, registered horses whose owners could no longer afford to keep them. Horses are a HUGE responsibility and I want to be 100% certain that I am ready - both financially and otherwise - to own my own horse...especially in this area where horse board is high priced and in demand!
Also - we went to see Tower of Power at the Fair on Saturday night. They were GREAT - but I think I'd rather see them somewhere with RESERVED seating. The area was PACKED - and from my point of view, there was a preponderance of very overweight, VERY drunk people around. I don't consider myself a snob, but I absolutely cannot stand the smell of beer. Ew!

Fortunately we found a great place to stand - right where we had a side view of the band, close to the rhythm section (drums and bass). Francis Rocco Prestia (TOP's bassist for 35 years) is a MAJOR influence for Jim - so naturally he wanted a good view of the bass action. Rocco was out for the past couple years with kidney problems - serious ones - but he seems fine now - he had LOTS of energy!
Gotta run...have a doctor's appt in a few minutes...more later
