SteviaPlus

  • Hi, Can anyone tell me if they have used this product and what it is? I am looking for a good low-carb recipe cookbook as I only have low-fat and saw one that used this product. Thanks for any information. Eleanor
  • Stevia is a natural sweetener. It is made from the leaves of the stevia plant. Most of the North American supply is produced in Asia. It is a powerful sweetener so use just a bit. It is definitely no-carb.
  • I use stevia packets in my coffee in the morning, it works out the same as the regular packets of sweetener. All the goodness of sugar without the carbs!
  • How does it compare to sucralose (ie. Splenda?). I've seen it at my local Shaws, in their "Wild Harvest" section but haven't gotten around to trying it.

I find the Splenda "neutral". It sweetens my coffee or whipped cream but I'm certainly not tempted to have a spoonful all by itself
  • Stevia Plus has more fiber in it than regular Stevia but both are carb and calorie free. It's sweeter than sugar but don't forget, in baking sugar adds to the texture of a product and you can't get that texture from Stevia or artificial sweeteners, even Splenda. It just isn't the same.
  • Hi, Thank you for your help. I have been using Splenda, but have never tried baking with it as some seem to say it works great and other say you really have to use half real sugar for it to take like the item you are baking. Maybe I'll just pass on the cookbook until I hear someone else say that they have tried some of the receipes in it. Caci
