  • During this journey, many have asked what my FINAL weight will be. I always tell them that I am only looking 10 lbs into my future. When I see it in my sights, I'll know.

In reality, I do not have a final number in mind. The number I have in my profiles on this board is from a bmi chart. It was the high weigh for my height. So many of the charts vary and depend on your build. I have been overweight so long, I have no idea what my build is. My mom says I am small boned like my paternal grandmother, but who knows.

How did you choose your final goal weight?
How do you recommend I choose mine?
  • For myself, I started with what was the highest amount for my height (146 pounds), as I got close to that amount, I dropped it to 140, and then dropped it again to 135. The hardest was going from 140 to 135, it took some time. After seeing how long it took to get from 140 to 135, I knew that 135 was a good weight for myself. I felt good, and I was proud of what I accomplished. I actually ended up a little lower during maintenance (70 pounds lost), and I have been on lifetime for two months now and doing awesome!
  • Currently I'm just aiming for onderland (199). After that, I plan on just trying to make it to the "healthy" range of the BMI charts as I think that's obtainable. After that, I'll just see how I feel. I know I can't make it to the low end and don't even want to try. I've got big boobs and wide hips. There isn't a chance in h*ll my weight will ever start with 11X.

You can choose a number in the "healthy" weight range but just don't put too much in to it. It can always be changed. Even as we age, change medications, life styles, etc. we may find we have a "new" normal which is fine, so long as it is healthy and works for you.
  • What's always stuck in my head is the so-called "rule of thumb" - for every inch after 5 feet & 100 pounds, add 5 pounds. I'm 5'11 almost, therefore = 155.

Never ever been closer to that weight than right now, so I have noo idea what I will look like once I'm there.

    Yeah this is good!

You could also measure your wrist, so you know what how small/big boned your are.
  • Honestly, I went with a weight I remember feeling really good at. Granted, it was over 20 years ago, but it's an attainable goal. I remember feeling healthy, and fit and getting comments on how little I was. It also puts me at the high end of the healthy BMI range. More than anything I wanted a realistic goal, that was achievable.
  • My final goal is outside my healthy weight range (but since I'm doing it online I'm able to do that), but I picked 160 because I still want some curves and I think I'll be able to maintain that weight. The second thing is the most important, finding a weight that I'll be able to maintain. Losing is only half the battle.
  • I chose the highest weight for my height, which was 132. This was mostly done so I could stop paying WW Then I pressed onward and kept losing to what I felt was more my ideal weight (120).
  • I joined WW and when I was given my little book at the meeting in the back of it was a graph. I picked the highest one for my height. 141..so I went with 140

This intrigued me. My doctor and I worked together to choose a goal weight for me that is outside the WW healthy weight range, but one that we both felt was a bit more attainable for me at the moment. I'm now in maintenance and (hopefully) only four weeks from reaching lifetime. But I did wonder whether WW would be okay with me moving lower. I guess they'd be fine with it as long as I didn't dip below the lowest weight in the healthy weight range for my height?

Yup, WW never questioned continuing losses because it was still within a healthy weight range. The WI ladies always complimented and congratulated me on each of those losses. I think they know quite a few people choose their WW goal weights to be the highest for their weight bc of the $$ factor. I see it discussed a lot online by fellow WWers!
  • How did you choose your final goal weight? Before I gained weight after I quit smoking I was normally 115-120lbs. I thought I looked great but looking back at old pictures I see now how thin and frail I looked so when I began this journey I decided 130lbs would be a good goal because I would still be healthy at that weight but not frail or too thin looking. For myself I wanted to pick a goal that would seem like it was easily obtainable and would let me still have meat on my bones.

How do you recommend I choose mine? I'd say to pick something you feel comfortable with that is within your heights healthy weight range and that can vary. Even if you are 5lbs over what is recommended for your height if you feel comfortable at that weight and can maintain there then go for it.
  • I started out with 140, thinking I'd look like I did back when I weighed 140 a couple of years ago. However, I have reached 140 and I still look terrible, so I dropped it to 130. I think most people just choose a number, and as they get closer, they decide if they want to raise their goal weight or lower it.
  • I remember the last time I was with WW...yeah this is not my first time..lol. That if you had it in writing from your doctor that WW would accept that goal weight, and allow you to become Lifetime with it, be it a bit higher or lower then what they have adviced. This may have changed. This is just my thoughts, but at a certain age, like in the 50's (me) I have to wonder if I should be as low as they are saying. But I will aim for it.

That's actually my plan. I can't ever remember weighing below 200 (although I'm sure I did in high-school, but my 15 year old body is a bit different than it is now at 30 ), so I know that once I get closer to 160 I may opt to go lower.
