  • Valentine's is still a ways off but I've started to think about planning what I'd like to do. Problem is, the holiday typically involves sweets or decadent dinners and my boyfriend and I are both committed to a healthy lifestyle.

Does anyone have ideas for cute, romantic food I could cook that would also be healthy?

    So far I've found:

    Strawberry Shortcake pancakes

Heart-shaped eggs (maybe for a salad?)

Strawberry shortcakes (recipe could be tweaked to something healthier)

Calzone hearts (could be stuffed with healthy things)

    Heart melon kebabs

Also, my Valentine present to him will be an engraved mug and I'd like to fill it with something special. Normally I would fill it with his favorite candy but I'm trying to think of something healthier. Anyone have any ideas?
  • Does he like tea? Fancy tea might be a good idea.

You could also put in a couple of pair of manly socks
  • You could fill it with little couples coupons like "Good for one 10 minute back rub" or "I'll make your favorite dinner" stuff like that. I do like the tea idea, though! Or like my boyfriend likes cartoons, so I'd get him a small toy or two from one of the ones he watches and put them in there.

    Those pancakes look AMAZING.
  • My fiance and I might forgot the dinner and chocolates and use the money to go see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. We both have seen it a bunch of times, but we love that play

Much better than eating or giving each other chocolates
  • What about these, yummy & says LOVE, me thinks!

  • By the way, Glory those manly socks are a hoot!

Yum!! Thanks for posting. I'm so going to have to try this soon!!
  • Wow those yogurt strawberries look amazing!! I also LOVE the socks! I definitely think I'll order those. He'd get a kick out of it!

    Thanks for the ideas!!
  • You are welcome!

    Here's a breakfast idea. http://annejisca.wordpress.com/2011/...banana-splits/

Thought I'd also share this one, any guy would love these edible roses this valentines day! Ok, not exactly healthy- but ahem...., praise the lard!!!!

  • Also, consider doing a physical activity together! One year my then-boyfriend/now-fiance took me hiking & then set up a romantic picnic off the trail. This year were going to take a Scuba class. I hate crowded restaurants & I don't need the temptation so this was our fix.
  • Usually when I make a fancy dinner it usually involves seafood, which is super easy and low in calories.

I've made something just like this but served just in the broth without the pasta. It's delicious and really feels special because I know I don't make mussels very often!

I also like to make lemon pepper scallops (get a good lemon pepper) and just pan sear until done.

Great sides would be roasted asparagus - this is my favorite recipe, roasted brussels sprouts (maybe with bacon or pancetta), or broccoli rabe.

If I'm not making seafood, I like to do a simple filet mignon on the grill or some kind of chicken in sauce or stuffed chicken.

For dessert, I love this because it's so pretty in the champagne glass.
  • What about cooking his favourite healthy meal with a heart-y twist? I have a friend who makes red (well, pink, but with red food colouring) mashed potatoes (cauliflower instead? I don't know how that would dye...) and heart-shaped meatloaf every Valentine's day. Just make sure you invest in good food colouring because it can add a funny taste!

I went away for two months the first summer we were together (about six months into our relationship) and I cut long strips out of nice paper and wrote my favourite things about my boyfriend, us together, memories, etc, on them. I did enough for him so he could open one every day while I was away. Maybe you could do something like that, give him a whole month of love in his mug and then he can use the mug and keep the paper slips elsewhere when he's read them all? My boyfriend still has his in the jar I gave them to him in. He opened them with me every evening when we chatted on Skype. It's a bit cheesy, and lovey-dovey, but I thought it was a nice idea
  • I saw this poster in my gym today and I thought of this thread!
The gyms promotion was bring your sweetie to a class for free (so any non member could come for free on v-day)
If you don't go to a gym, maybe you guys could go to a class for the night, or go out dancing or something that involves some activity instead of sittin around watchin a movie
  • i really like the heart-shaped eggs and the frozen strawberries! easily doable!

i don't really have a problem with my guy though, since he is stick thin and can eat anything... but they are still good ideas!
  • Just wanted to post what I ended up making for a healthy Valentine lunch for my boyfriend.
