trying to lose weight in china...help !!!!

  • Hey pengyoumen !

I am Dimma, borned in Canada, studying in China...and dieting in China !
It is quite hard since ALL of the recipes don't apply to me. All the cheap ingredients included in healthy recipes cost a fortune in China ! Not to mention that chinese girls are all so skinny, and they eat all of the forbidden foods ! Carbs fried foods are everywhere and temptation is just sitting on my shoulder.

I really need to just read some posts, see how other people are feeling, and get the chance to talk about how I feel...coz dieting in another country is a whole new experience !

I have many hobbies and interests, so if you are intested in China, or the overseas life, or anything at all, lets chat ! jiayou !

  • Ni hao! Huanying guanlin!

I lived in China from 2004-2008. I taught English at a university in the NW. I loved it, and miss China a lot.

I sympathize with you about losing weight in China. It was not easy for me, and while I started my healthy lifestyle changes there, most of the weight came off once I moved back to the US and was able to more accurately track calories.

First of all, looking at your stats, you're already in a "normal" weight range. I don't say this to discourage you from reaching your goals, but to acknowledge that many people find it more difficult to lose weight the closer they are to their goal. I would suggest posting on the Featherweights forum to get some advice from the experts there.

Specifically to China, I would suggest cooking for yourself as much as possible. I found it SO easy to eat out (cheap and yummy and fast!) but there's a lot of oil and fat used, and you can't control that. You can control what you make and eat at home (as many veggies as possible). Also, watch the rice - rice servings can be huge in restaurants, perhaps 2 cups of cooked rice, which is a lot of calories.

    Good luck!
  • Hello and welcome!

I lived in Hong Kong but on Kowloon side from 1997-1999. My family would go to the Mainland quite a bit for sightseeing and shopping. Beautiful country out there but then again, being Asian, I'm totally biased! See you around :]
  • OH I really feel for you. I workd in China for 6 weeks last year, which is a little different to living in China. But I really do understand the struggles.
For me in china it was harder because I had no cooking facilities and no real Mandarin language. I was staying in very nice hotels - and being fed at work, and often afterwork being taken out for dinner. The problem was that I had no idea if the next meal I was given was going to be appetising, so I ate whatever I could when I could. Our company was very generous with our budget so we could eat great food when we were choosing our own.
I understand being Healthy Weight but being worried about your weight - it comes on so quickly in China, and it's harder to get exercise because it's intimidating having all thee people watching you - because you just look 'different'.
no answers for you - just try to stick to protein, and keep away from the rice and the steamed bread.
    Where in China are you?
