Default The Boredom Patrol

I've been a boredom eater my entire life. One thing that I've come to realize is that bored people are not very good at pulling themselves out of boredom. There certainly seems to be something about the state that sucks away my drive and immagination. Somehow, wondering around the house aimlessly and pestering my cat doesn't work.

That being said, I thought it might be nice to share our best bordom-busting ideas, and I'll start:

Go To: www.cuteoverload.com
Usually the word "cute" is one that makes me take 2 big steps in the opposite direction, but I just can't resist this site!

Read: A book by Terry Pratchett (any of the Diskworld series)
His quirky, satire-laden writing inspired by modern life but written in the style of fantasy-adventure is absolutely hilarious. You'll have to go to the "Science/Fantasy" section of the library or bookstore, but don't be worried, 14 year-olds don't read anymore, so no one will see you there!

Take a shot: with a camera
Take a walk around your house or around your neighborhood with a camera in your hand. This is how I've taken some of my favorite photos, and is especially fun with a digital camera, since you don't have to worry about the cost of film and processing. (This suggestion can also be put into the catagory of "pestering your cat".)

I know a lot of people here have very busy lives, but I'd be supprised if we don't all have the odd half-hour when we can hear the clock ticking and the cookies calling. Let's invite each other to enjoy some of our favorite past-times.

Oh. My. God. Andoreth, really, I can only most sincerely thank you, from the very bottom of my heart, for sharing that to-DIE-for site!! I have been laughing at puppy pic's for like the last hour.....I'm serious. I'm going to share it with my buds on the lymphoma message board I frequent, because just one look at one of those pic's ...... and all is right with the world. I was going to start a new job, but I think I might just have to cancel that so I can just sit at home looking at those photographs. *nods seriously*

You're welcome, I'm glad you liked it!

Also, I wanted to thank you for your avatar picture. There is just something about your carefree smile and feeling of celebration that has brought a smile to me everytime I've come across it in the forum.

I'll have to go look at that site in a minute once I'm finished posting and catching up here!

I fight boredom eating by keeping my hands busy. A friend taught me to knit last year and I love it. Plus it is great for keeping my hands busy because once I sit down to work on the current project, I have trouble tearing myself away!

Reading is another outlet for me, though the knitting has drastically cut down on my reading time!

Lately, when I get bored, I go write about my frustrations or anything that is going on in my livejournal... I can't keep a handwritten journal as it is too much work; but I am almost always at the computer at some point during the day and if I am bored and I write about whatever is on my mind, I find that I come up with wonderful ideas to break the boredom (usually going for a walk if the weather is nice). It makes me feel more connected and more in touch with myself instead of getting lost in the nothingness of being bored.

I'm so addicted to cute overload. I get the posts emailed to me I'm totally not a fluffy bunny kind of person either, but baby animals make the work day go much faster

Awwww. That's so nice of you! That picture was taken in 2004 when I was working hard and losing tons of weight, right before I got diagnosed with advanced stage lymphoma. I really was FEELING a sense of celebration and, you're right, I truly felt very carefree also. Someone I love was making me feel loved and special, and I was laughing, laughing. Soon after that, when the bomb dropped, I kept that photo in my mind's eye, and that feeling in my emotional memory, and vowed to myself that I'd get back there. I do have a tendency to throw my head back when I'm laughing a particularly "joyous" laugh -- and still managed to do plenty of that during my 6 months of chemo -- thanks to that someone I love, who makes me laugh and laugh. So now I keep that pic on there because it represents both my past and future, and it gives me a good feeling. I'm glad it gives you a good feeling too.
