  • How did you determine your goal weight? What makes it the magic number for you?

There have been a bazillion threads on this but here is one with a new twist.......my secret.

I am a bit embarrassed to share the real reason for my goal weight. But I luv ya'll so much I'm going to tell you (but shush, don't tell anyone else!)

I arrived at 135 (to 122 really, that would be a nice 150lbs lost) through a lot of soul searching......... oh, did I say soul-searching, I meant watching Bridget Jones's Diary! At the begining, Bridget steps on the scale and it reads 135 and she says "Obviously I must lose 20lbs" (I know...gag me!). But I saw that and I was like, Renee looks pretty darn okay at that weight and you know what, I want to get to that weight or a bit lower. Because then I would be able to watch the movie and say to myself "Ha! I am THINNER than you Bridget Jones, so take that!" (I know, I know, I lead a very sad life ).

Well anyways, that is my secret. So, how about you? Do you have a secret reason for your goal weight? Or a practical reason for your goal weight? Any reason at all?
  • Wow, well, my weight goal is 200lbs. That would be a 150lb weight loss for me... I don't go by the BMI scale either - that says that at my height, I would still be overweight, but I think it is wrong. I am 6ft tall, and I do geniunely have a large bone structure, along with quite a bit of muscle under all this fat. I feel like that for my body type going down to 180 would be much too low, and I have no dreams of making it to "onederland". I want to have a fair amount of muscle mass and I think 200lbs allows for that along with my body type.... I think I'd look damn fine at that weight... However, of course, as the goal gets close, that idea might very well change.
  • I chose 142 because...it sounded good?

I have no idea what I will look like when I lose the weight. 142 may be too low, too high...I dunno! LOL! But I liked the way 142 sounded. And it sounds reasonable and acheivable to me.

Plus I like random numbers. 145 sounded too cliche.

And 42 is the answer to everything.
  • Quote: And 42 is the answer to everything.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I would TOTALLY pick 142 for that reason, but that would be way, way, way too low for me. I'm shooting for 180, because I've been there before and I was *hot*.
  • I chose 161 just because it will be 100 lbs. lost, and I want my name on the 100 lb. loser sticky.
  • You all are so funny! And Charlotte I LOOOOOVVVVEEE Bridget Jones!

I picked 145 because the last time I lost all this weight I reached 166 and felt like I had about 20 pounds left to lose. 146 sounded too specific so I went for 145 (I guess I'm all about the cliches Freedom&Light! )

Body frames do make a difference. Bucketgirl, I'm 6 feet tall too, but have a smallish frame for my size under all this fluff and not a ton of muscle). Like some of you said, though, I'm totally open to readjusting the number when I get there. I just want to look and feel good!
  • I've picked 180 for now. I guess because it puts me just about at "overweight" vs. obese. But it's not a hard and fast number. I figure when I get there (and I am saying when now, not if) that I will have lost 115 pounds, and that may be a good place to stop and reassess.

But I'm trying not to focus on a weight goal too much, and focus instead on being healthy, with the idea that the weight loss will be a lovely side effect.
  • I've picked 130 but I'm open to changing my mind. I picked that number because it's in the middle of the weight range I'm supposed to be for my height. No secret, nothing special. Yeah, I know, pretty boring.
  • I'm not really sure what my goal weight should be. I just picked 150 because it sounded reasonable.
  • I like how you arrived at that weight, shrinkingchica!
I chose my goal weight because when I was a Freshman in High School I weighed 145. I have a picture of myself at a school dance at that weight and by golly I looked good. Of course at the time I thought I was a fat cow. I don't know if I will be at an ok weight at 145 though. Three kids and lots of gravity later has changed my body big time, but we shall see when we get closer to goal if it's a weight that is even possible.
  • Goal weight
I've seen so many different figures for my height (5'3") but right now I'd settle for 199. I've been morbidly obese practically all my life, so I have NO idea what's hiding under this prison of fat. I guess if I ever get to losing weight again and under 200, I'll decide then. But if forced to pick, I think I'll take 170 or 165 dunno...

Have you read the book - I think its really interesting that they missed the bit out when she reached her goal weight that she had been striving for for the whole of her adult life and then everyone thought she looked too skinny and washed out and that she looked better at her normal weight. Really bought home to me the need to set myself really sensible limits. My goal weight is too skinny but deliberately so, so i know that once i get within 8 lbs of it I'm a good weight.
  • I've been boucing 150 and 170 around, that's a 20 lb difference. So I've stuck with 170 and will reassess when I get there. Maybe it will be more or less but I'll be healthy by then and will hopefully know what is right for my body and mind.
  • LOL! I made running 3 miles my goal because that is what Stephanie Plum does in Janet Evanovich's novels.

I love what you just said!

My goal weight is 170 because I was looking pretty darn hot then too!
