Default HypoThyroidism

Hello out there!! I was dx with hypothyroidism back in June of 2000. I've been taking SynThroid .075 since then. I just had a baby back in July of 2003, and it seemed 8 months after having him I've had problems again. I've gained weight my periods are all screwed up. I went to see my dr this past tuesday 2/17, and they did an hcg, and tsh level. They both came back fine.. they were supposed to fill in my synthroid for me but when I got to walgreens, no one called in. I called my drs back this morning and come to find out my level is a little elevated. I start taking progestrone today to "induce" my period. I go back in on Tuesday 2/24 for a pap and to talk about my thyroid.

I'm sick of these thyroid problems I've had for the past 3 years. I'm sure there are alot of people out there who's had problems alot longer than 3 years. It's become a pain the butt to remember to take my pills every morning and that I can't eat for an hour after taking them.

Who else here has hypothyroidism, and how do you deal with it??

Hi--instead of taking synthroid, which did not do much for me, I take T3, the other thyroid hormone. It's called L-thyronine and it has to be specially compounded and the doses increase in 7.5 mg increments. It's not prescribed very often, so you would need to find a doctor in your area who knows about it if you are interested. My doctor had me check my temperature every day and it's low. THis is how she decided to prescirbe the T3. I immediately los weight, my periods were regular, my cramps diminished greatly, and I felt better than I had in a very long time. I know live in another city and take a lower dose and it really has helped me. Again, there are some doctors who think that the low body temperature and thryoid thing is junk science, but it has worked for me. You might look into it. It can be taken with the synthroid, too, if you need that.

Hi Patience! I found out that I was hypothyroid about nine years ago. I just pop a pill in the AM and forget about it. I get my TSH levels checked every six months and often my dosage is tweaked -- right now I take 200 mcg/day. If the dose is changed, my TSH is re-checked every six weeks until it's where it should be.

I had read a lot of horror stories about how hard it is to lose weight if you're hypothyroid, but found that when I got serious about diet and exercise, I lost with no problem (122 pounds in a little less than a year).

Good luck with getting it straightened out!

HI!! Im hypothyroid but actually started as hyperthyroid due to a nodule on my thyroid that was removed in december 2003 and since it was removed Ive gained mass weight and became hypothyroid and was put on synthroid about 3 weeks ago and havent really noticed a change yet I will get my levels checked again in about 2 weeks and hopefully soon they will get my meds set where they need to be. unfortunately the endocrinologist I will be seeing only comes to my town once a month so I have to wait to be able to see the other options available to me. Believe me I know how your feeling Im right there with ya!! Good luck with it and if you need someone to talk to Im available
