Default Newbie w/Question

Hi everyone! I was talking to a friend today and she told me that I shouldn't have over 25g of carbs per day.

IS THAT TRUE??

That seems completely insane! I'm a vegetarian and almost every single thing I eat has at least 20g whether its a nectarine or a nonfat yogurt. That seems impossible! Please tell me she's wrong...

You didn't say in your post if you were following a specific low carb program such as Atkins or not.

I know that 25g of carbs is not very much! I like the South Beach Diet because you don't count carbs, just choose from an extensive list of foods. I, personally, refuse to be a slave to counting anything! I mean, it may be okay for short term, but it gets really old really fast...I want something I can do for the rest of my life!

I know this answer isn't very specific...maybe someone else can help?

Aphemia,

Franny was right it's hard to say if we don't know what plan you're on if there is one. On Atkins Induction it's 20g a day and gets higher in each sucessive stage. South beach is higher and Carb addicts plan is not restricted to grams just times of day. So if you'd like to give more info we can probably help a whole lot more.

South Beach or Sugar Busters is probably much more vegetarian friendly. There is a vegetarian plan on many low carb plans, but you would need to read the book and get the specifics.

As for nectarines, quite a few fruits are not allowed on carb restricted plans. You would have to eat the lower glycemic fruits, such as berries. High sugar fruits like bananas, pineapples and mangoes are out. I can't remember the restrictions on South Beach or Sugar Busters, but nonfat yogurt is not on the Atkins plan. Most nonfat items are replaced with starches and sugars. You would need to read the labels. On Atkins, post induction, you can have plain full fat yogurt. The idea of the full fat is that all foods are basically fat, protein or carb. You are restricting the carbs, so that leaves fat and protein.

I tried Low Carb Vegetarian once. It wasn't easy, but it is possible! Fruits were mostly out. At first, they always are, but then you can reintroduce them. Vegetables will be your main source of food, and eggs if you eat them. Sugar Busters and phase 2 of South Beach will probably be easier for you so you can stretch your meals with whole grains. Have you looked into those plans?
