Well, I've already been through two weeks of Phase 1...TWICE...and each time I've tried to add a few carbs, it's set me off on a major carb binge. The first time I tried multigrain oatmeal and the second time I tried strawberries. Now, I'm afraid to leave Phase 1. I still have another 9 days to go on it anyhow before I have to worry about what to add.
I added strawberries and I did the "oatmeal thing". 1/2 cup of oats cooked in 1 cup of skim milk with 1 tbsp of chopped walnuts and some cinnamon. It tastes DIVINE! I never thought I'd be able to eat porridge without spooning huge quantities of brown sugar into it.
It was a toss up for me...I had frozen all my beautiful strawberries before I started so I am leaving them for blending with my Ricotta.
I walked through the produce section looking for something that would satify me and yet not put me in a spin. So I picked a big peach! It was so good and didn't cause any rebound effects at all.
I would of really loved the watermelon, but because of the nature of the melon...I would of been too tempted to eat more than I should.
I have been eating a slice of 12 grain bread once or twice a week and I always have oatmeal cookies in the house for my husband, so last week I had a planned "cheat" with an oatmeal cookie....and ONE was plenty...who would of thunk? Some of you might disagree with this choice, but I am looking at this as a life change and realisticly, I can not give up everything I love. So I will learn to treat myself in moderation with things that are not too bad for me, although I must admit a Chocolate Biscotti would of been a lot better
Anyway, I am rambling on about nothing...so have a great Friday everyone!
Boy am I glad to see that I'm not the only one having headaches. While I haven't joined the group here, I too started on 6/23 so this is day 5 for me too. I felt crappy yesterday. Headache and no stamina. Today, I felt great. No headache!
I really miss my shredded wheat and fruit for breakfast. That will be the first thing I add back. And MILK. Good grief, I didn't realize how much I love milk - even if its 1%. Otherwise, I'm not craving the sweets.
I realize now how much high-sugar stuff we had been taking in each day and, I don't want to go back. This has helped DH's sugar so much, I can't hardly believe it.
I see we started on the same day and had the same type headaches
So, we're both on Day 7. How are you doing? I'm feeling great and also feeling lighter although the scale has me maintaining... nonetheless, I'm sure it will head down soon. Back to reading the SBD now.
Hi! I am on week three...(one week of phase II)...I introduced fruit ! Yum !!! I have lost 12lbs. so far. Of course my husband has lost twice that and doesn't hesitate to let me know..ha ha..men.
I thought I would really want bread, but I haven't touched it! I am looking for the ultimate South Beach Pizza though !!!
I can't wait to add back in apples!!!! I've missed them for so long (I was on Atkins before SB) although P1 hasn't been too hard for me. I trick myself in the mornings by eating l/f cottage cheese with s/f Jell-O mixed in. This makes me think I'm eating fruit. Also, the Crystal Light Morning Sunrise (I think that's what it's called) tastes like Sunny Delight to me so I've been having a little bit of that when I really am wanting fruit juice.
Terri-you said that you wanted to drink milk....you can on P1 now. I drink the fat free Hood Carb Countdown milk with dinner every night but you're allowed to have the real stuff!
Whoe grain cereal and milk the first day - strawberries the second - then I'll alternate until the strawberry season is over! Man, that's been the hardest part of SB - that I couldn't eat the healthiest part of my eating regime.
Meg 1+2
Thanks for the note about life style. I've been thinking about that for a while - at least one of the reasons I'm heavy is that my eating habits stink! This process should result in my having healthy eating habits, and a good collection of recipes for making good food. I don't like eating restrictions - I can only do this when I know that I'm just retraining myself.

I'm so glad to hear some of you talking about headaches and feeling kind of blah. I'm on day 3 of Phase 1 and altho I've had no headache...I am tired, lethargic and at times feel almost drunk! And did I mention incredibly cranky?!!! My yard needs mowing so bad and I don't have the energy to go out and do it. Please tell me this gets better!
The first thing I'm going to add is fruit, also. I'm such a carb-a-holic, I'd better stay away from breads til I'm well on my way with this.
Hi,
I'm glad to read others' experiences with Phase I. I felt lethargic and drained on days 3-5 and even allowed myself some extra nuts but it didn't help. Lisa, I felt kind of drunk too. Now I'm on day 9 and I'm feeling energetic, peaceful, alert and happy.
As for adding foods in Phase II, I'm looking forward to whole grain bread with breakfast, and eventually some rice with a dinner stir-fry. I'm not craving the sweets though, not even fruit.
Hi, all! Great thread! Suzanne, are you joining us on SBD? I had no idea! Welcome!
I added in a ton of carbs and fruit the first day, per the menu in the book (mistake!). I think strawberries are a great choice...in season, taste good, and not so sweet that they start a craving! I have found, and so have many others, that adding carbs and/or fruit to your first meal of the day may cause cravings, so watch it, those of you who plan on it. One day I may have Cheerios and bananas for snack, just because I love that combo, but right now it sounds like a huge off plan bomb!
I have also found that the fruit and the carbs cause much less cravings if I combine them with protein. Add in cheese or peanut butter and it not only tastes good (a pear with laughing cow is divine!!!) but seems to ease any possible cravings.
Phase 2 is great...definitely look forward to it!!!
