I have ran a few half marathons before- they are so much fun! My advice would be to build up a really good base- get comfortable with running 1-3 miles at least 4-5 days per week with some cross training. Then when it gets closer, (about 10 weeks before the race) follow an actual training plan. If you go to the website marathonrookie.com, then go to half marathon, there is a good 10-week training plan, I used something similar to this when I trained for mine.
