Default Soy!?

What have you been told about soy or phytoestrogens with PCOS? I have heard conflicting stories about how if affects the hormones and symptoms. I would be interested in everybody elses opinions. I will share what my endo has to say about it when I see him in a couple of weeks.

Good question

I too have heard many different conflicts point of views regarding Soy. I was hoping something about it would be in the book, The Insulin Resistance Diet. I have done a little of "homework" on it, but always run into very confusing and conflicting opinions on it.

Would love to know what endo says.

Me too! I put 30 grams of soy protein in my smoothies every day. I agree, the info out there is very confusing.

I am going to the endo tomorrow to get my ultrasound and go over my glucose testing from last time. I will ask him about the soy! Does anybody have more questions they would like me to mention?

Ok here is what I know about soy...

First of all. I love it. Always have.

Anyway, Soy contains natural estrogens. The human body Isn't readily able to discern soy estrogen from human estrogen.

With PCOS most of us have high estrogen counts in our body along with high amounts of estrogen receptors to go with it. When you eat soy your bodys receptors will bind with the soy estrogens and your body will produce less of its own estrogens. I have started eating some kind of soy every day recently and I find that this alongwith my glucophage is really improving the way I feel.

Cultures who eat a high soy diet usually have lower levels of breast cancers and other estrogen fed diseases than other cultures. Also post menopausal women in Asian cultures(high soy eaters) far less severe symptoms than other women.

Its a great little food.

Hope this helps.

I went to see the endo today and he said that soy should be fine. I couldn't remember where I saw the info about soy not being good for pcos so I didn't have anything to quote. He said he had never heard of any problems with it, and that the soy I would eat would have such a minute effect on the body that it would be fine to eat it.

Mostly everything is fine...the bloodwork came back better than last year. I do have one enlarged ovary that he wants to ultrasound again next month.

Hey don't worry about the weight gain from stopping smoking. It should be over by now. Most people only gain for one month. Rarely two...at least that is what my doctor told me. I gained 15 pounds, but my stamina was better than 15 lighter and heavy lungs. It also made me more serious about not starting again! I didn't want to gain more weight when I stopped. One was enough!

Glad the blood work came back better than before. Interesting about the soy. Seems like everyone has a different opinions. But guess we all know what they say about opinions...lol
