There's no need to be intimidated about the exact amounts. Most salads are very forgiving, and measuring is often not a big deal.
Onion - add as much as you'd like to. If you're intimidated, add just a little and after tasting, decide if you want more.
the oil and vinegar isn't a big deal either. If you add more than you need, it will drain to the bottom of the bowl, especially if you use a slotted spoon to serve your salad. In general, the "classic" proportion is two parts oil to one part vinegar. Though with a very good vinegar you can use a higher percentage of vinegar. You could try starting with two tablespoons of oil, one of vinegar, and then after mixing the salad taste. You can add a little more vinegar and stir it well, and taste again.
