Unfortunately, it seems like everything we try to get food into the baby (like a supplemental nursing system) makes him less effective at actually nursing (which is what we want, but we can't do 100% of the time, because he was still losing weight at two weeks, and even our breastfeeding-friendly, "some weight loss is totally normal" pediatrician, who is married to a lactation consultant, was worried).
I just feel like we did EVERYTHING right (non-medicated birth, good prenatal care, skin-to-skin after birth, nursing on demand, good diet, etc) and still my supply is very, very low.
Amanda,I'm right there with you! We didn't have a consultant to consult at all. But Laney wouldn't ever latch right, so I started pumping and bottle feeding. Then I also had major supply issues, and as of two days ago, after pumping 15 minutes at a stretch every 3 hours, I got a grand total of 2.5 ounces for the DAY. We've had to supplement with formula for two weeks now, and I made the difficult decision yesterday morning that we'd go to formula exclusively. I had gotten stressed out over my horrible supply and lack of latching to the point where I was crying all the time and hated even being here at home. I decided I'd rather have Laney experience her first six weeks of life with a happy mom. She got at least a mixture of breast milk for two weeks, which isn't what I'd hoped for, but is better than none.
Mentally I feel much better today. Physically though...the boobs HURT.
It's just frustrating when you do everything you're "supposed" to do and it doesn't work out.
