Thanks everyone for the advice and thabnks sugarbianca for that food for thought. during both times of tension I was in unfamiliar territory and kind of impatient to get done with the run so maybe that was the issue because I haven't had that problem since and congratulations on your walk/run with your friend sounds like you kept up a pretty good pace! Great going!
I got up 5:45 and got in my 2.8-3.0 route in about 34:38. then worked out on my lunch. I love the feeling from a good weight workout where there's a little resistance!
