Jane - how did the dinner party go? I would have a hard time cooking all that stuff and not eating it, though I would be fine with mashed potatoes, since I'm not low-carbing it.
I love to cook, but most people aren't vegetarian, and I have some friends who just will not try something that does not have meat in it. My usual holiday dinner party meal is the most delicious, most labor intensive lasagne. It is a roasted eggplant, hazelnut parsley pesto lasagne, made with a bechamel sauce, homemade hazelnut parlsey pesto, and roasted eggplants. So labor intensive, between the pesto-making, roasting the eggplant slices, making the bechamel, boiling the noodles, and assembling the whole thing. But really spectacular enough that even carnivores are like: this is the most awesome thing ever. I dread thinking about how many calories are in it, though. So I'm not sure whether I will reprise that or make a lower-calorie vegetarian lasagne. I still have 1+ week to think about it.
Rosebud - it turned cold here last night, and there was a drop or two of snow when I went to the car. Mostly it has been raining for days, though, enough that there are some flood warnings in certain places. I hope you have time to get everything done before you leave!
pear - oh my goodness, chica. I know exactly how you feel. Let me TELL you. I have had that happen a lot. SO MUCH. Most people gain weight during TOM. I gain weight BEFORE TOM, at some point in my cycle, then lose rapidly during.
Here are SOME of my stories of unexpected weight gain:
1. I was about 345 when I went on vacation to northern Europe in May 2011. It was a cruise, and while I had a drink or a beer whenever I wanted, (especially when we were stopped in various cities), and dessert, et cetera, we were walking so much that I was confident I had not gained weight. When I got back from the trip I stepped on the scale and weighed OVER 360 lbs. It was like starting over. 4-5 days later I stepped on the scale again, and was now 340. The long, international flight and made me retain so much water. I actually lost some weight, but thought I had gained 15 lbs.
2. May 2012: Peru! I was 320 lbs when I left. Again, I was not 'dieting'. I had drinks if I wanted them, appetizer/dessert if I wanted them, but I didn't eat, for example, the DONUTS folks bought in the Lima airport when we were on our way to Puerto Maldonado. Also I had a stomach virus that kept me basically from eating for two days. But, recalling my previous experience after international flights, I waited a couple of days before stepping on the scale to give the retained water time to flush out.
I was 329 lbs. +9 lbs! After climbing all over Machu Picchu and doing a 2.5 mile hike on Taquile Island after not eating anything for 36 hours at 13,500 ft.
Well, another 3-4 days later, I was 315 lbs. I had lost probably 5 lbs in Peru, masked by the water weight from the flight, or the different time of day, or the fact that my scale missed me.
3. I am doing everything right, in the lower 290s. This is maybe in August of this year. Feeling good about my food, hoping to see a new decade soon. Overnight the scale says 299 again. FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. I was like: whoa! A couple of weeks later, I finally see 289 lbs. That 299 was a fluke, water weight, something else.
4. 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, I hit 267 lbs, but after that my weight bounces up higher, to 270ish. I teeter there, coming down slowly, and am 268 lbs the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, missing my Thanksgiving goal of 265. Thanksgiving: travel, family, food, dessert. I mean, I am not eating the way I did before, but I have dessert with every meal, beer or wine when I feel like it, and my share of chex mix.
I am READY to face the damage when I get home and force myself to step on the scale on Sunday. I am 272 lbs, +4 lbs. honestly? that seems like too much weight gain, but I face it. Monday: 270 lbs. -2 lbs! Clearly, some portion of that gain was wholly transitory. After that I start wooshing rapidly all week (it is TOM, heh, when I lose quickly), and by the end of the week I was 263 lbs.
The important thing is that you assess your habits and acknowledge them. If you were on plan, or even mostly on plan, that seems like a cyclic gain of some sort. Or a weighing error, or a clothes thing. It is disheartening, but you have to remember that if you are doing everything right, your body will catch up with the rest of you.

PEAR ~ many, many times in fact -- it's all a part of the process of weight-loss. Usually, it's water gain caused by one of many things, as MEM explained i.e. sodium, TOM, exercise, etc. Hang in there, that could disappear in a couple of days ...

all day long. Is supposed to warm up a bit over the next few days; that will be great for our trip too! Have a wonderful Wednesday ladies ...
Will be gone til Friday night, so will catch up then ...
