Yeah, and that's why when someone does exhibit politeness and good manners we should go out of our way to thank them - it will help to encourage their good behaviour and offset people like that lady you were talking about.

I especially do this when a teen or smaller child open's the door or steps aside to let me walk past. It is so cute to see their faces beam when you give them a big smile and say thank you!

I'm from a smaller town where people still do hold doors, say good morning, smile ect...And then I moved here. Gawd was I in for a shock I don't care...I still do all of those things, people can think I'm nuts all they want I went back to visit my mom this past October and it was nice to see people be nice to eachother.

I had a bad experience a while back. I went to the grocery store-and it was 8 pm. I needed to get some stamps from the customer servise desk, and as I went into the store I checked the customer service desk hours and it said they close at 9. Cool-plenty of time to grab a few things and stop back to get them on my way out, right?

I went through the checkout lane at about 8:40 and walked up to the customer service desk. The lady was starting to close out her drawer and put up the CLOSED sign as I walked up. I just looked at her and said "Can I get a book of postage stamps?" She did the ticked off heavy sigh and pretty much threw them at me.

I called the office when I got home-told them what happened, described her to a tee as well. I told them that if you are going to close at 8:40, then the house sign should be changed to 8:40. I told them that I used to manage a salon, and if we said 9pm-we didn't close out the drawers and lock the doors until 9pm.

Never had a problem there since.

UGH! This topic is so funnt, because this happens so much. We to live in Wi, and I have had to deal with so much rudeness, more so then other states I've visited. Uassualy I"m just rude right back, and then complain. But my husband hates it! HE will let anyone walk on him, and that makse me even more angry! My parents have move from Metro Milwaukee, WI to Hick town KY. EVERYONE IS POLITE there! I love it!
Now, I have a story or a bill collector who wasn't rude. I called about these things I got. Told him how the inssurance was suppose to pay them, ect.. HE was soo nice. I even thanked HIM. The funny thing, the person I normal wold have had to talk to, was out. And she is a rude *****! I asked him to switch my account to himself.

When people are really mean or rude to me I simply smile at them and say "Does someone need a hug?" it works for me and they always blush.

I hate it when you hold the door open for someone and not only do they not say thanks but then they also wave other people through as though you're the official door opener or something!

Also, I hate walking slowly but I live in a tourist town and people walk sooo slowly and right down the middle of the pavement (sidewalk) so you can't get past and then glare back at you walking right behind them like you're stalking them or something!

Also last week someone in a car knocked me off my bike and drove off. Criminally rude!!!

It has always been my practice that when I am going through a door, I hold it so the person behind me can grasp it. It is the courteous thing to do. However, the last few years, there seems to be some kind of game, where the person behind me goes out of their way to avoid taking the door and scoots through the doorway when I am still holding the door. These are the same people who let the door swing close when you are behind him. It seems that this is done by people in their 20s and 30s.

Well, everyone is the south isnt as great as they used to be either. Two years ago, went to JC Pennys for xmas shopping. I bought a purse there the day before that was on sale and when I got home, realized I didnt get the extra 30% off that it stated on the sign. So took it back the next day. Had already taken the tags off and stuff but I brought them with me so they could scan. The girl at the counter, says "that sign doesnt apply to this purse." And I say "ok, well that sign says applies to all 'x-brand' purses but if it doesnt apply to this one, thats ok. But I would rather get one that is with the 30% off and need to exchange." She said "no, youve already taken the tags off and it could have been used." I said "well, as you can see on my receipt, I bought this about 14 hours ago and it couldnt have been used very long which is hasnt been." She still argued with me so I asked for the manager. She calls them and the manager comes over. I explain the situation and the manager looks at the cashier and ROLLS HER EYES. At this point, I cannot imagine my money possibly going to their paychecks and tell them I just want my money back. She said that wasnt possible since the tags were off. So I ask for her manager. So, we are waiting on that person to call back when a woman comes up behind me ready to check out. The original cashier slides my purse, bag and receipt off the counter into the floor to take the woman behind me. At this point I become a real %$#^& and they finally give me my money back. I go home and call the store manager to complain and he tells me "well, everyone gets a little sensitive over the holidays in this mall traffic. Im sure it wasnt as bad as it seemed." So no, just bc we are in the south, doesnt mean that people know how to act any better. I havent shopped at that place since.

When people are rude to me the first time I try and be as nice as possible (and still get what I want from them), if it keeps happening then I will change tactics...

In the end everyone can have a bad day, so I give them the benefit of the doubt the first time.

I love this whole 'rude people' thread. I worked for years in retail, and have had so many people be rude to me. My favourites were always the ones that wanted to return something they'd bought months and months before and would swear at me because I couldn't process the return.

That being said, There are as many rude clerks as there are customers! From working in retail, I'm always extremely courteous to clerks, but I have a really high standard of how they treat me. I don't need to be treated like a queen, but seriously, if I can fake caring and be nice to people, so can you!

I once had a clerk tell me off in a store because I had a button on for a political candidate she didn't approve of. She finally said "Well what do I know, I'm just a political science major" I bit my tongue, but wanted to yell back "You moron, that means you know how the system works, not who is the best candidate! and its obvious you're not a business major because you'd know that yelling at me, the customer, is a stupid idea!!!"

So apparently I wasn't done rambling...I just looked back and someone mentioned holding the door open for people. My dad once did that for a woman who was walking into the mall a few feet behind him. He usually does this for people, man or woman, if they are close enough behind him. Anyway I guess this woman is some kind of super feminist, or PMSing or something, anyway she turned to him and said "So I suppose you expect me to %!$# you now?!?" He let the door slam in her face

OH my god! I can't believe she said that! Okay I am from the South and I do have a bit of a potty mouth...but I would never imagine talking like that to a complete stranger!

I would be so embaressed. LOL But I use to work in Food Service. I have seen it all, Seen rude customers and seen rude clerks. Infact I might have even been the rude clerk a time or two. Hey I am not perfect, but still That lady just amazes me.
