  • I'm in the midst of some major landscaping at my place. Yesterday I was working in the garden from about 6:30 am to 6:30 pm, pushing wheelbarrows, carting around plants, digging holes, etc. After I finished, I had a shower and a quick supper, and then just about fell into bed because I was so exhausted. I had no time for my usual power walks. However, I think I will count some of my gardening as part of my exercise, since I worked a lot harder doing it than I do on my walks! I can't count the entire 12 hours I was out in the garden. However, according to my fitbit, yesterday I clocked over 22,000 steps, burned over 3,000 calories and had 103 active minutes. According to fitbit, active minutes are only awarded after more than 10 minutes of continuous moderate-to-intense activity. Those active minutes were earned via gardening, since that's all I did yesterday! So, I will go with 100 minutes of exercise for yesterday.

    Total to date: 320 minutes
    Goal: 1,500 minutes

    Jul 1: 2 x 30 minute walk (60/60)
    Jul 2: 1 x 30 minute walk (30/90)
    Jul 4: 2 x 30 minute walk (60/150)
    Jul 5: 40 minute walk + 30 minute walk (70/220)
    Jul 6: 100 minutes heavy gardening (100/320)
  • Tuscany - that is awesome! Is your yard done after your long day yesterday, or is it a lengthy project?
  • Thanks, Sassypants! I bought a new (to me), but old (otherwise) home 2 years ago. Last year we did the interior renovations (total gut/re-model) and this year we're doing outside. I bought the home after the prior owner passed away. She was over 80, and the gardens hadn't been properly looked after for quite a few years, since she was unable to do so. The landscaping is a relatively major project. I have a landscaping company/crew involved, since I couldn't have done it myself. The crew spent 3 days with excavators and bulldozers digging out the prior gardens, which were full of weeds and potato rock (rock that looks like a potato!). The landscapers then put in fresh soil and now we're doing the plantings. They also laid stepping stones along the side walkways to get from front to back, and they replaced the top layer of a timber retaining wall, which was rotted on top. We should finish the planting this weekend. The irrigation company comes on Monday. I have automatic sprinklers/irrigation, but it will need to be adjusted. After that we will mulch the gardens. Then we will be done. Yeah! When the project is all finished (sometime next week), I'll post some pics (if I can figure out how!).
  • Another gardening day, although I only did about half as much as the prior day. I will again use fitbit's active minutes, which were 53 and I will round to 50.
