We've been lucky that we've both had success with plain old calorie counting. I'm working out and he hasn't been, but that's the only difference. We both kind of also prefer a larger breakfast, smaller lunch and bigger dinner, though I throw in an afternoon snack most days too.
I also understand the irritability when hungry. I get pretty bad myself, but have learned to recognize when those things are about to happen. The doctor told me about two years ago I was borderline hypoglycemic, so I started paying more attention to what I was eating and how things made me feel. He may be in the same boat, but isn't ready to make the changes I made yet.

Of course, I'm not one and we do drive each other crazy at times. He'll starrt washing dishes before I'm done eating......
DAGMAR About 1/2 the time I do all the clean-up and the other 1/2 we share it. When I cook I clean pots and pans as I go then all we have is dishwasher stuff....I start rinsing plates while Angie starts putting leftovers in Tupperware.
She asked if I wanted another taco shell fired (something she does maybe twice a year)...I said not to worry about it, If I wanted more, after I finished the one I was on, I'd make nachos with the beans, hamburger, cheese, etc.
