I'm business technology writer in an IT consulting firm. The analysts & consultants may be brilliant on technology, but many of them are not very good writers, and some have significant ESL issues. I clean them up & make them sound professional.
Since I'm working with people all over the world, many of whom I'll never see, just exchange e-mails & IMs & talk on the phone with, my company does not much care where I work physically. So I get to work from home two days a week, sometimes more often, if the weather makes the commute intimidating. I really like this flexibility.
But because I'm working with people all over the world, they forget that I'm supposedly keeping the usual business hours on U.S. Eastern Standard Time, and they like to send me questions at 5 AM & well past 6 PM, and they're particularly fond of inundating me with work during lunchtime. It's a workaholic culture with everyone on a BlackBerry. They also work through the weekends & many holidays & their time off -- Sunday afternoons into evening are very popular -- and I always feel this subtle pressure to keep up.
